In the past few months, Liverpool have secured new contracts for two of their most important players in Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, but the club are approaching a crossroads with many of the midfielders’ teammates.

Virgil van Dijk
The thought of the Dutchman no longer marshalling the Reds’ defence is chilling, but he’ll be on the cusp of his 36th birthday when his contract expires next summer, and he’s the highest-paid player at Anfield on £350,000 per week (Capology).
Objectively it’d make sense for a parting of the ways in 2027 with that information to hand, but you simply don’t jettison one of the best defenders of his (or any) generation so frivolously.
Alisson Becker
Another long-serving stalwart whose signing has been transformational for Liverpool, the goalkeeper turns 34 in October. While he may be approaching the twilight of his career, he’s not on the brink of retirement either.
He could easily have the number 1 spot at Anfield tied down for another three years, if he wishes to stay on beyond next summer.
Curtis Jones
It seems increasingly plausible that the midfielder could leave the Reds before his contract expires, with Inter Milan pursuing him with considerable intent this summer.
The decision for Liverpool mightn’t be whether to offer him an extension, but whether to cash in on him if they receive a handsome bid from the San Siro and the player wants the move to Italy.
Harvey Elliott
In our heart of hearts, we’d absolutely love for the 23-year-old to stay at Anfield, but last year we thought he’d gone for good when he left for Aston Villa.
Realistically, Elliott needs a big season under Iraola if he’s to still be at Liverpool in 12 months’ time. Another man who could potentially be sold in the meantime, rather than leaving as a free agent.
Joe Gomez
The Reds’ longest-serving player has again been struck down by injury, and the loan signing of Araujo spoke volumes for how pressing LFC’s need for centre-back cover had been.
If our number 2 recovers to become a key player this season, he might earn the right to extend his stay at Anfield. If he’s a peripheral figure in 2026/27, he might be granted a fond farewell next May and a new chapter in his career thereafter.
Wataru Endo
The Japanese midfielder will turn 34 next February and has been mostly a backup player throughout his time at Liverpool.
There’s a strong chance that he’s let go on a free transfer in 2027. If that is the case, it won’t be without a rousing send-off from Kopites who’ve taken the archetypal cult hero to their hearts.
Kostas Tsimikas
It’s a similar story for the Greek Scouser, who’s set to faithfully deputise for Milos Kerkez at left-back this season but could move on next summer, by which stage he’ll be 31 and it’ll have been seven years since he signed for the Reds.
Like Endo, he’s a player who’s never consistently held down a starting berth at Anfield but is hugely popular with the fans and would be granted a heartfelt farewell.
Stefan Bajcetic
Like Jones, the midfielder could potentially be sold before the end of this summer’s transfer window, with Getafe reportedly in talks over a move for him.
The 21-year-old has had rotten luck with injuries over the past couple of seasons, and he faces a big challenge to try and get back to the excellent levels that he showed upon his first-team breakthrough during the 2022/23 campaign.
Calvin Ramsay
The Scottish right-back has never let Liverpool down on the rare occasions that he’s featured, but it seemed telling that he’s been overlooked so much over the past year even when both Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong were injured.
If the 23-year-old doesn’t secure a permanent transfer in the next few months, there seems a strong possibility that he’ll be let go on a free in 2027.
Harvey Davies
Third-choice goalkeepers rarely get a chance to feature at this level, so opportunities for a fourth-choice are extremely limited.
However, time is still very much on Davies’ side (he’ll be 23 next month), and if one or more of those ahead of him in the pecking order were to move on, he might yet be retained as a squad player at Liverpool.
He could viably follow Calum Scanlon in being offered a new contract and a loan move elsewhere to build up senior experience.
