The New York Giants entered the final stages of the 2026 preseason with a roster that looks dramatically different from the one that began the offseason. Training camp at The Greenbrier established a physical tone. Now, with the Giants moving to South Florida for joint practices against the Miami Dolphins, the evaluation process is entering its most revealing phase. The controlled environment of individual drills is giving way to live competition against another roster. That means every missed assignment, contested rep and blown coverage carries greater weight. For two established first-stringers in particular, the upcoming practices and preseason action could determine whether they remain on the 2026 roster or not.

WR Darius Slayton

Darius Slayton has earned his place as one of the Giants’ most dependable perimeter weapons. However, his grip on a starting role is suddenly far less secure than it once appeared. The equation begins with Malik Nabers. He remains the unquestioned centerpiece of New York’s passing attack. The real competition exists behind him, though. That’s where the Giants have assembled a collection of receivers capable of filling very different roles. Slayton has traditionally carved out his niche through vertical speed, experience and an ability to punish defenses when given opportunities downfield. That may no longer be enough, though, if the coaching staff wants a more versatile and consistently productive receiving rotation.

Darnell Mooney changes that calculation, too. Mooney brings a polished route-running profile and the ability to threaten defenses from multiple alignments. Calvin Austin III adds another layer of speed and quickness to the short and intermediate areas. That gives the Giants alternatives when designing three-receiver packages.

Slayton’s biggest problem, however, may be coming from someone further down the depth chart. Malachi Fields has emerged as one of the most compelling performers of camp. His performance has turned what initially looked like a relatively straightforward depth chart decision into a legitimate competition.

The key question during joint practices will be whether Slayton can consistently win against Miami’s defensive backs. If he does so, his experience remains a significant advantage. But if Fields continues stacking impressive reps, the Giants could decide that Slayton is more valuable as a rotational deep threat than as a full-time starter.

CB Deonte Banks

For Deonte Banks, the stakes may be even higher. The Giants added Paulson Adebo to strengthen the perimeter and Jevon Holland to provide impact and versatility on the back end. Those moves raise the standard for everyone around them, including Banks.

The former first-round pick possesses many of the physical characteristics teams want in an outside corner. His length, athleticism and ability to match receivers vertically give him the tools to become a high-level starter. The problem is that potential only buys a player so much time when competition intensifies.

Speaking of which, Greg Newsome II represents one of the most significant threats to his starting position. Colton Hood has also pushed the competition forward. He has shown a willingness to contest throws aggressively and make himself visible during team periods. That creates a difficult situation for Banks. His best moments demonstrate why the Giants have invested in him. However, inconsistent leverage on intermediate routes can erase those flashes quickly.

Going against Miami’s receivers should provide the Giants with a much cleaner evaluation. Banks will have to demonstrate that he can handle different route combinations and finish plays when the football arrives.

Up for grabs

The Giants do not need to make dramatic changes simply for the sake of change. They need to identify the players who give them the best chance to win when the regular season arrives.

For Slayton, that means proving his vertical ability and experience remain more valuable than versatility of the other receivers. For Banks, it means turning physical talent into consistent coverage execution.

Neither player should be written off after a difficult stretch of training camp. That said, the hierarchy is clearly shifting.

With joint practices looming and preseason games providing the final pieces of evidence, the Giants have reached the point where reputation matters less and performance matters more. Slayton and Banks may have entered camp as established starters. They cannot afford to assume they will leave it that way.
