Preseason football means different things to different players. For established stars such as Garrett Wilson, the focus is a nice seat on the sideline and a pack of sunflower seeds. There's no need for the New York Jets to take unnecessary chances with someone so important.

For younger players and key depth pieces, however, preseason games can become important opportunities to build momentum, earn trust and solidify roles heading into the regular season. That will certainly be the case when Aaron Glenn's ball club opens its slate against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Friday.

Several players have generated buzz throughout training camp, but a few wide receivers enter the opener with particularly compelling reasons to perform well. Whether the goal is to accelerate development, secure playing time, or continue the march back after early injury, these three receivers have plenty to gain with a nice showing under the primetime lights.

Omar Cooper Jr. can accelerate his development

Few Jets rookies entered camp with more intrigue than Omar Cooper Jr. The third of three first-round selections this past April, he possesses the type of run-after-catch ability and physicality that can create problems for defenses.

Still, through the first portion of training camp, he has largely avoided the spotlight as he adjusts to the speed and complexity of the NFL game. That isn't necessarily a concern. Rookies often need time to develop chemistry with quarterbacks and become comfortable within a new offensive system.

His coaches aren't panicking, but the preseason opener presents Cooper with an opportunity to showcase the traits that made him such an appealing prospect. A strong performance wouldn't suddenly elevate him into the starting lineup, but it could accelerate confidence in his readiness to contribute sooner rather than later.

Tim Patrick can strengthen his hold on a key role

Tim Patrick may be one of the most important under-the-radar additions the Jets made this offseason. The veteran receiver quickly established himself as a respected presence in the locker room after returning from a brief stint on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

His experience, professionalism and reliability bring value to a relatively young receiver room. The roster spot isn't the question. Patrick is widely expected to make the team.

The bigger question is how large of a role he will play once the regular season begins. A productive preseason showing could strengthen his case to become one of Geno Smith's most trusted options behind Wilson and Adonai Mitchell. Veteran receivers often separate themselves through consistency, and Patrick has a chance to do exactly that.

Arian Smith can answer the biggest question surrounding him

No Jets receiver may have more riding on the preseason opener than Arian Smith. The second-year wideout's elite speed remains impossible to ignore. He has consistently shown the ability to create separation and stretch defenses vertically, giving him a skill set that few players on the roster can match.

The challenge has never been getting open. It's catching the football consistently.

Reports from camp have featured both encouraging moments and familiar concerns. Smith has enjoyed strong practice sessions, where he appeared nearly unstoppable, but questions about drops and reliability continue to follow him. That's why preseason games matter.

One explosive catch can remind everyone why coaches remain intrigued by his potential. A costly drop can reinforce the concerns that have followed him throughout his development.

If the Jets were forced to trim the roster today, Smith would likely have a path to the initial 53-man roster. Still, few players on the offensive side of the ball have a greater opportunity to improve their standing than he does this week. For Cooper, Patrick and Smith, the preseason opener is more than just the first exhibition game of the year. It's an opportunity to shape the conversation around their roles before the regular season arrives.
