The 1st Test between Sri Lanka and India is scheduled for August 15 to 19, 2026, at Galle International Stadium. Both sides have named their squads, and the match is set to produce several compelling individual contests.

Sri Lanka are without Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka through injury, while India are missing Jasprit Bumrah. Despite those absences, the playing groups contain enough quality to make several one-on-one battles worth tracking closely.

Here are three player battles to watch out for in first Test between Sri Lanka and India:

1. KL Rahul vs Prabath Jayasuriya

KL Rahul comes into the Galle Test in strong recent form. Across his last 10 Tests, the India vice-captain has scored 896 runs at an average of 52.71 and a strike rate of 49.58. Those numbers reflect a batter who has been consistent and measured in the longest format. Prabath Jayasuriya has been Sri Lanka's most reliable spinner at home in recent years. In his last 9 Tests, he has taken 46 wickets at an economy rate of 3.17 and a strike rate of 67.23.

In the 2-Test home series against New Zealand in 2024-25, Jayasuriya claimed 18 wickets, the most by any bowler in that series, and was named Player of the Series as Sri Lanka won 2-0. He also took 17 wickets against Pakistan at home in July 2022, again finishing as the series' leading wicket-taker and earning Player of the Series honours. Against Australia in Sri Lanka in January-February 2025, he added 9 more wickets, though Australia won that series 2-0. Rahul's ability to handle quality left-arm spin on a turning Galle surface will be central to India's batting effort and Jayasuriya will look to pack away the opener and gain upper hands for his side.

2. Dinesh Chandimal vs Mohammed Siraj

Dinesh Chandimal is one of Sri Lanka's most experienced batters and will be expected to anchor the middle order at a ground where he has played many times. He has scored 3000+ runs in Sri Lankan conditions against red-ball which shows his talent and consistency. Mohammed Siraj is India's frontline pace bowler in this series following Jasprit Bumrah's absence.

Siraj's ability to generate movement and maintain pressure in Sri Lankan conditions will be tested against a batter of Chandimal's experience and temperament. The right-arm pacer will play his first Test in Sri Lanka while he will use the white-ball experience to cap off the opposition. How Chandimal handles Siraj's pace and swing in the first innings could shape the tone of Sri Lanka's batting performance across the match.

3. Dhananjaya de Silva vs Ravindra Jadeja

Dhananjaya de Silva captains Sri Lanka for this series and is one of the most technically complete batters in the home side. Silva has scored 1500+ runs in Sri Lanka and will look to take control as many sessions as possible in his hands. Ravindra Jadeja is a key member of India's spin attack and brings left-arm orthodox bowling that can be effective on Galle's surface.

De Silva's ability to read and counter Jadeja's variations will be important for Sri Lanka's middle-order stability. Jadeja, in turn, will look to use flight and turn to keep de Silva under pressure. The left-arm spinner has taken 13 wickets in two games in Sri Lanka. The contest between the Sri Lanka captain and India's senior spinner could prove decisive in both innings.
