Ravindra Jadeja has been a fixture in Indian cricket since 2009, yet the conversation around him rarely matches the scale of what he has achieved. At 37 years old, the left-handed all-rounder continues to contribute across all three departments of the game at the highest level.

Since his Test debut on December 13, 2012, against England, Jadeja has quietly assembled a career that places him among the most complete players in the history of the format. While he has done well in the white-ball formats, Test cricket is where he has seen most of his success. Here are three reasons why he deserves far greater recognition.

3. An elite all-round Test record that very few can match

Before the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, Jadeja had played 89 Test matches, scoring 4,095 runs at an average of 38, with a best score of 175*. His best bowling figures in an innings stand at 7/42, and he had taken 348 Test wickets. During Sri Lanka's first innings, he entered the 350-wicket club. Those numbers alone tell a remarkable story, but the context makes them even more striking.

He is only the fourth player in history to score 4,000 or more Test runs and take 350 or more Test wickets. He also reached the 2,500-run and 250-wicket Test double faster than anyone before him. In October 2019, he became the quickest left-arm bowler to reach 200 Test wickets. During the 2025 England series, he became the first cricketer to pass 2,000 runs and 100 wickets in the World Test Championship era. These are not incidental milestones. They reflect sustained excellence across a long career.

2. A batting explosion in the 2025 England Test series

Jadeja's batting in the 2025 India-England Test series, officially known as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, was one of the standout individual performances of that summer. He scored 516 runs across the series, recording six scores of 50 or more, including five consecutive fifties and a solitary ton in Manchester. In doing so, he became the first batter ever to score six 50-plus scores in a single Test series in England while batting at No. 6 or lower, breaking Sir Garfield Sobers' record of five set in 1966.

The Saurashtra cricketer was also the first Indian to achieve six such scores in a Test series in England, surpassing the previous best of five shared by Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant. He finished as India's third-highest run-getter in the series, behind Shubman Gill and KL Rahul, and became the first Indian to score over 500 runs in a Test series while batting only at No. 6 or lower.

1. Fielding ability that remains exceptional at 37

Jadeja is regarded as one of the finest fielders of his generation. He is a captain's dream, whether he is fielding inside the circle or in the deep. Maintaining that standard at the age of 37 in Test cricket, a format that demands sustained physical effort across five days, is a notable achievement in itself.

His presence in the field adds a dimension that statistics alone do not fully capture, and it remains one of the reasons he continues to be valued in the Indian Test setup. Throughout his career, there have been various instances when a piece of brilliance from him in the field has boosted the morale of his teammates and they have bounced back from precarious situations.
