Fred Warner is pushing back on the idea that an overaggressive attempt to force a fumble caused one of the San Francisco 49ers’ strangest training camp injuries.

Running back Jordan James suffered fractured ribs during the second day of camp in July, a particularly unusual injury considering the 49ers had not yet put on pads.

A video later circulated appearing to show Warner punching at the football as James carried it, prompting speculation that the All-Pro linebacker had accidentally caught his teammate in the ribs while trying to force a fumble.

Warner finally addressed the incident Tuesday, and said the viral clip was not actually from the play that injured James.

“That play specifically, I know there was a clip that circulated with me and Jordan, that wasn’t the play where he got hurt,” Warner said. “It was honestly just an unfortunate collision between Jordan and I when we didn’t have pads on. It wasn’t me going in and intentionally trying to punch the ball out.”

That distinction matters because the injury had quickly been framed as friendly fire caused by Warner’s trademark technique.

Acting head coach Chris Foerster previously described the sequence as a “perfect storm,” explaining that a punch attempt combined with James spinning created an awkward collision.

For James, the timing could hardly have been worse.

The young running back entered camp trying to carve out a role behind Christian McCaffrey, and the missed practice time has created more opportunities for rookie Kaelon Black to gain ground in that competition.

Warner, meanwhile, remains one of the tone-setters for a 49ers defense that has quickly rediscovered its edge.

New defensive lineman Osa Odighizuwa recently described the veteran linebacker as carrying a “menacing aura,” an image Warner has earned through years of relentless, physical play.

There is no softening Warner’s style. But on this play, he insists the violence of the result had nothing to do with intent.
