The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers locked horns for a joint practice on Tuesday, but starting quarterback Brock Purdy wasn’t exactly thrilled with how his unit performed. Following the session in El Segundo, California, Purdy delivered a blunt assessment of the offense, dropping a truth bomb about the team’s lack of intensity.

“Honestly, I don’t think it was our best day for like fundamentals and stuff,” Purdy told reporters. “Just a little off. I mean, obviously there’s some good stuff and some stuff we need to work on, but still, like we could have come out with a more chip on our shoulder, offensively, not on defense.”

Purdy clearly expects a higher standard as the 49ers gear up for their preseason matchup against the Chargers. While the defense apparently brought the necessary energy, the offensive side of the ball struggled to find a consistent rhythm. Joint practices often serve as a measuring stick during the dog days of training camp, and Purdy recognized that San Francisco failed to match Los Angeles’ urgency.

To be fair, the 49ers are currently operating without some of their biggest offensive weapons. Superstar running back Christian McCaffrey missed his second consecutive practice due to tightness, forcing the offense to adjust on the fly. Still, Purdy understands that execution and fundamentals must remain sharp regardless of who lines up in the huddle.

As the undisputed leader of the franchise, Purdy taking accountability and calling out the offense is a massive positive for head coach Kyle Shanahan. After throwing for 2,167 yards and 20 touchdowns in just nine games last season, the 26-year-old quarterback knows what it takes to operate an elite unit.

Training camp is the perfect time to iron out these sloppy mistakes. With the regular season rapidly approaching, Purdy’s reality check might be exactly what the 49ers need to get their offense back on track before Week 1.
