Preseason football creates opportunities, but it also exposes players who fail to capitalize on them. The Philadelphia Eagles will enter Saturday’s opener against the Baltimore Ravens with several roster competitions still unsettled.

For players fighting to climb the depth chart, one strong performance can change an entire summer. For those who entered training camp with an advantage, a difficult night can reopen a competition that appeared to be moving in their favor. Tanner McKee, Johnny Wilson, Grant Calcaterra, Michael Jordan and Chance Campbell are among the Eagles with the most to lose in Baltimore.

Tanner McKee

McKee entered camp as the favorite to serve as Jalen Hurts’ backup, but the arrival of Andy Dalton created legitimate competition. Philadelphia didn’t add a quarterback with Dalton’s experience simply to provide another training camp arm.

With Hurts unlikely to play extensively, McKee should receive enough work to make his case. He must command the huddle, make sound decisions and avoid the type of mistakes that give a veteran competitor an opening.

Johnny Wilson

Wilson’s size will always make him an intriguing developmental receiver. At some point, however, those physical traits must become consistent production.

Philadelphia’s receiver room has become crowded. Dontayvion Wicks, Darius Cooper and Elijah Moore have produced during camp, while Hollywood Brown brings experience. Rookie Makai Lemon will also have a role once healthy.

Wilson can’t afford to disappear against Baltimore. He must finish catches and show that his value extends beyond being a big target.

Grant Calcaterra

Calcaterra entered the offseason as one of Philadelphia’s most experienced tight ends behind Dallas Goedert. The additions of Johnny Mundt and rookie Eli Stowers have made his standing less certain.

Mundt offers value as a blocker, while Stowers possesses the athletic traits to become a long-term receiving weapon. Cameron Latu has also created competition. Calcaterra must demonstrate that he can contribute as a receiver without becoming a liability when the Eagles run the football.

Michael Jordan

Jordan’s starting experience gives him an advantage over some of Philadelphia’s younger reserve linemen, but it doesn’t guarantee him a roster spot.

Drew Kendall has received positive reviews, and Willie Lampkin is beginning to generate attention at center and guard. Jordan must show that his experience translates into dependable performance. A difficult night against Baltimore’s defensive front could allow one of the younger guards to move ahead of him.

Chance Campbell

Campbell is competing in a linebacker room with defined roles at the top and uncertainty near the bottom. His clearest path to the roster may come through special teams.

That makes every defensive and kicking-game snap important. Campbell must tackle consistently, communicate effectively, and show he can contribute across multiple phases. Missing assignments or tackles would be especially costly for a player fighting for one of the final spots.

Final analysis

The preseason opener won’t decide every competition, but it will provide Philadelphia with its clearest evaluation yet. McKee, Wilson, Calcaterra, Jordan and Campbell have opportunities to protect their standing. A poor performance could make the remaining weeks of camp considerably more difficult.
