Preseason games rarely have much impact on established starters. For younger players, however, they can become valuable opportunities to earn trust, improve positioning on the depth chart and force coaches into difficult decisions. The New York Jets will enter their preseason opener with several roster battles and role competitions still unfolding. While some players appear secure in their spots, others have a chance to strengthen their cases for increased responsibilities heading into the regular season. Here are five Jets worth watching. Cade Klubnik, quarterback The rookie quarterback has experienced exactly the kind of training camp many first-year passers go through. There have been encouraging moments, including a strong performance during the Green and White scrimmage, where, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini, he reportedly threw for around 154 yards and two touchdowns. There have also been reminders that development is rarely linear, particularly when it comes to operating efficiently in the red zone. Klubnik's biggest opportunity may be the chance to put additional pressure on Bailey Zappe in the battle for the No. 2 quarterback job. Zappe's experience remains an advantage, but Klubnik has flashed enough playmaking ability to keep the competition alive. A productive preseason debut could make that race much more interesting. Jeremy Ruckert, tight end The Jets have invested heavily at tight end over the past several years. Jeremy Ruckert understands that reality better than most. The former third-round pick enters camp competing in a room that now includes Mason Taylor and first-round rookie Kenyon Sadiq. While Sadiq continues working his way back from injury, opportunities remain available for players willing to seize them. Ruckert has shown flashes throughout his Jets tenure, but the preseason provides a chance to remind coaches that he deserves a meaningful role in the offense. Consistent production could help solidify his place in the pecking order as the regular season approaches. Jelani Woods, tight end Few Jets have generated more quiet momentum during training camp than Jelani Woods. The former Indianapolis Colts tight end has received praise from quarterback Geno Smith and has taken advantage of additional opportunities created by injuries elsewhere in the tight end room. Now comes the next step. Training camp buzz is valuable, but preseason games provide a different level of validation. Woods has the athletic profile and physical tools that once made him an intriguing draft prospect. A strong performance could strengthen his case to remain firmly in the Jets' plans once Sadiq returns to full health. At a minimum, he has an opportunity to continue making himself difficult to ignore. Darrell Jackson Jr., interior defensive lineman Opportunity often arrives unexpectedly in the NFL. For Darrell Jackson Jr., it came when injuries along the defensive front created additional reps with the first-team defense. The rookie defensive tackle has responded well, earning positive reviews and producing during recent practices. He recorded a sack during the Jets' controlled scrimmage and continues to benefit from increased exposure against higher-level competition. The challenge now is sustaining that momentum. If Jackson can continue producing against opposing teams during the preseason, he may accelerate his development timeline and carve out a larger role than many anticipated when camp began. Malachi Moore, safety Malachi Moore enters the preseason with perhaps the most intriguing challenge of anyone on this list. The second-year safety started 14 games as a rookie and finished with more than 100 tackles, but his role isn't guaranteed entering Year 2. The Jets have added competition throughout the secondary, including Dane Belton, while veterans such as Andre Cisco remain firmly in the mix. Moore's physicality and willingness to play near the line of scrimmage have never been in question. The focus now is consistency in coverage and proving he can be a complete safety. A strong preseason performance won't guarantee a starting role, but it could help Moore create separation in one of the more competitive position battles on the roster. For each of these players, the preseason opener represents more than the first game on the schedule. It's an opportunity to shape how coaches view them before roster decisions and regular-season roles begin to take form.
