The Philadelphia Eagles will move from training-camp evaluation to live competition when they visit the Baltimore Ravens for Saturday night’s preseason opener. Philadelphia has spent the summer installing Sean Mannion’s offense, evaluating several newcomers and attempting to establish depth behind one of the NFL’s more talented starting lineups. The opener will provide the coaching staff with its first opportunity to evaluate those developments against an unfamiliar opponent. The final score will carry little importance, but individual performances could significantly affect several position battles. The Eagles must reduce their offseason roster to 53 players by Aug. 30, leaving three preseason games for rookies, reserves and roster-bubble players to make their cases. Here are five key storylines to watch in Baltimore. How much will the Eagles’ starters play? Nick Sirianni has not committed to playing every established starter, making Philadelphia’s personnel plan one of the biggest questions entering the game. Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, Lane Johnson and several defensive standouts do not require extensive preseason work to prove their value. The Eagles must balance injury prevention with the benefits of operating Mannion’s new offense against another defense. Even a brief appearance by the starting offense could provide useful information about tempo, communication, and execution. If Philadelphia rests its top players, the game will become an extended evaluation of the roster’s depth. Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee continue their competition Dalton and McKee are competing to serve as Hurts’ primary backup. Dalton provides 15 seasons of NFL experience, while McKee offers familiarity with Philadelphia and intriguing developmental potential. Preseason production should carry significant weight in the competition. The Eagles must evaluate which quarterback can manage Mannion’s offense, protect the football and maintain command when playing with reserve offensive linemen and receivers. Rookie Cole Payton should also receive snaps as Philadelphia begins determining whether it can carry three quarterbacks or develop Payton through another avenue. The preseason format should create enough work for all three quarterbacks, but Dalton and McKee have the most direct competition. A strong performance in Baltimore could create early separation. Can anyone separate in the crowded receiver battle? Philadelphia’s wide receiver competition has become one of the most compelling stories of training camp. DeVonta Smith and first-round pick Makai Lemon are central to the team’s long-term plans, while Dontayvion Wicks has positioned himself for an important role in Mannion’s offense. The competition behind them remains unsettled. Darius Cooper and Elijah Moore have been two of the summer’s strongest performers, while Hollywood Brown needs to translate his established track record into more consistent production. Britain Covey, Johnny Wilson, Quez Watkins and several other receivers are also competing for limited roster spots. Lemon’s hamstring injury could create more offensive snaps for the rest of the group. Cooper has already earned additional work with Hurts, but Saturday will reveal whether his difficult practice catches can translate against Baltimore’s defensive backs. Which reserve offensive linemen establish themselves? Philadelphia’s starting offensive line is largely settled, including Tyler Steen at right guard. The greater uncertainty involves the reserve tackle and interior positions. Third-round pick Markel Bell will be among the most important players to monitor. The 6-foot-9, 346-pound rookie has displayed the ability to work on both sides of the line, but the preseason will test his technique against NFL speed and power. Fred Johnson, Cameron Williams, John Ojukwu, Myles Hinton and Hollin Pierce are also involved in the tackle-depth evaluation. Inside, Drew Kendall, Willie Lampkin, Jake Majors, Micah Morris and Michael Jordan are competing for reserve roles. The Eagles value offensive linemen capable of playing multiple positions, making versatility and assignment consistency as important as individual blocking victories. How will the rebuilt special-teams units perform? The preseason will provide an important evaluation of Philadelphia’s coverage and return units. Jake Elliott and Braden Mann remain established specialists, but rookie Rocco Underwood must demonstrate that he can handle the long-snapping operation without disrupting timing. The Eagles must also identify their preferred returners and core coverage players. Covey has proven punt-return ability, while Cooper, Hayes, Shipley and several defensive backs could receive opportunities in the kicking game. For players near the bottom of the depth chart, special teams may offer the clearest path to the roster. Coverage discipline, tackling and avoiding penalties will be critical because an otherwise quiet offensive or defensive performance can be offset by significant special-teams value.
