For all the attention given to MVP races and individual player awards, the Associated Press's NFL Coach of the Year award often comes down to one question: Who changed the trajectory of a franchise? Kevin Stefanski has won the award twice. Brian Daboll earned it after leading an unexpected playoff run. Kevin O'Connell claimed it after guiding the Minnesota Vikings to a 14-win season. The common thread isn't always dominance. It's transformation.

That's what makes Jesse Minter such an intriguing candidate entering the 2026 Baltimore Ravens season. His team isn't rebuilding or searching for relevance. They're a proud organization attempting to rebound from a disappointing campaign that fell short of expectations.

If Minter can restore consistency, elevate the defense, and lead Baltimore back to the postseason, he could quickly become one of the strongest Coach of the Year candidates in football. It doesn't seem impossible, and here are about five of a bevy of reasons why he can be handed the trophy at season's end.

1. A new voice has brought renewed energy to Baltimore

Sometimes a coaching change arrives because a franchise needs a fresh perspective. That appears to be the case with the Ravens. This isn't a roster lacking talent. Baltimore still features elite players on both sides of the ball and enough depth to compete with anyone in the AFC.

What the Ravens lacked a season ago was consistency, particularly when expectations rose. Early training camp reports suggest Minter and his staff have injected fresh energy into the building. The coaching staff also appears well-positioned to succeed, with Declan Doyle handling the offense and Anthony Weaver helping shape the defense. If that renewed energy translates into victories, voters will notice.

2. The AFC North could be there for the taking

The AFC North remains one of football's most unpredictable divisions. Maybe the Pittsburgh Steelers strike gold with Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy. Maybe they don't. Perhaps Joe Burrow stays healthy and returns the Cincinnati Bengals to contention. Maybe injuries once again alter the Bengals' trajectory.

Could the Cleveland Browns surprise everyone? Stranger things have happened. The point is simple: no one truly knows how the division will unfold.

What seems entirely possible, however, is that Baltimore will emerge as the most complete team in the group. If Minter guides the Ravens to an AFC North title after they missed the postseason last year, he'll have one of the strongest narratives any Coach of the Year candidate could ask for.

3. Prime-time games create prime-time opportunities

Winning matters. Winning when everyone is watching matters a little more. The Ravens are currently scheduled for four prime-time contests, providing multiple opportunities to showcase their progress before a national audience. That's a significant stage for a first-year head coach.

There's also a chance that number grows. If Baltimore and Pittsburgh once again find themselves battling for division supremacy late in the season, the NFL could easily flex that matchup into a national window. A winner-take-all showdown in January would only increase attention on Minter's work.

Visibility doesn't win awards on its own, but it certainly helps.

4. He has stars on both sides of the ball

Coach of the Year candidates often benefit from having players who generate their own award buzz. The Ravens have plenty of those. Lamar Jackson enters every season as a legitimate MVP candidate. Kyle Hamilton possesses the versatility and playmaking ability to enter Defensive Player of the Year discussions. Roquan Smith remains one of the league's premier linebackers and emotional leaders.

Having stars doesn't guarantee success, but if Baltimore returns to contender status while Jackson, Hamilton, and Smith perform at elite levels, Minter's role in guiding that success becomes increasingly difficult to ignore.

5. The defense gives him a unique advantage

This may be the strongest argument of them all. Minter isn't simply the head coach. He's also the defensive play caller. That distinction matters because it creates a direct connection between Baltimore's defensive performance and Minter's reputation.

The Ravens already have the personnel. Hamilton, Smith, Marlon Humphrey, Trey Hendrickson, and an increasingly deep defensive unit provide a strong foundation. If Baltimore's defense rebounds after a substandard 2025 campaign and becomes one of the league's best units, much of the credit will flow directly to Minter.

New faces leading high-profile teams always create headlines. A first-year Ravens head coach revitalizing one of the NFL's most respected defensive brands would create plenty of them. Coaches often receive too much blame when teams lose and too much credit when they win. That's simply the reality of the profession.

In Minter's case, however, the circumstances are aligning in his favor. He inherited a talented roster, assembled a respected staff, and now has the opportunity to restore one of the AFC's flagship franchises to prominence. If Baltimore returns to the postseason and its defense looks like the dominant unit many expect it to become, don't be surprised if Jesse Minter's name appears on the final Coach of the Year ballot.
