A masterclass in Galle: How Devdutt Padikkal battled fatigue & sweltering heat to score maiden Test century vs Sri Lanka originally appeared on Cricket News. Add Cricket News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Devdutt Padikkal scored his maiden Test century on Day 1 in Galle, fighting through sweat & humidity. His 150-run stand with KL Rahul, who retired hurt on 77 with cramps, anchored India's first innings. The knock likely cements Padikkal's No. 3 spot in the side after a nearly two-year wait for a Test return.

'Easy to lose discipline when tired': inside Devdutt Padikkal's gritty battling knots in Galle heat vs Sri Lanka Devdutt Padikkal picked one of the toughest days imaginable to produce the best innings of his career, grinding through Galle's brutal heat and humidity to bring up his first-ever Test hundred against Sri Lanka. The left-hander from Karnataka blended patience with the occasional flash of aggression to repeatedly unsettle the line and length of Sri Lanka's spin duo, Prabath Jayasuriya and Keshara Nuwantha. He walked into this Test already in fine touch, having struck a century in the warm-up fixture against SLC XI, and simply carried that momentum straight into the real thing. There's a decent chance Padikkal wouldn't even have started this match had Sai Sudharsan been fit and available. Instead, this innings has more or less answered any questions about who deserves the No. 3 spot going forward. Speaking after play wrapped up on Day 1, Padikkal couldn't hide his emotion as he reflected on finally reaching three figures in the format for his country. MORE: 'Devdutt Padikkal is God sent': India star hailed for dominating SL spinners Padikkal admitted this wasn't a straightforward knock to build. The heat and humidity took a serious toll as the day wore on, and staying switched on through that fatigue became just as important as anything he did with the bat. “In this knock, determination for me was playing through that tiredness and fatigue that I was feeling, especially towards the third session," he said in a video shared by BCCI. "I think it was getting really hot, and we were losing a lot of fluid. We were sweating all the time. So it was really important that I was determined enough to keep going and keep pushing forward." He also spoke about the discipline required on a surface that offered little in the way of easy runs. He said: “It wasn't the easiest of wickets to bat on. I think we had to make sure that we didn't play too many last shots. We had to make sure that we kept our minds in the game as long as possible because, like I said, again, when you get tired, it's easy to lose that discipline, and I think as a team we did that well today." Determination. Discipline. Patience 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗗𝗣 𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆 ✨ The centurion recaps Day 1 Heroics in Galle 💯 - By @mihirlee_58 WATCH 🎥🔽 #TeamIndia | #SLvINDhttps://t.co/0SMVQHLcEk — BCCI (@BCCI) August 16, 2026 Padikkal's long road back to Team India through domestic cricket A large part of Padikkal's success came alongside his fellow batter from Karnataka, KL Rahul, with the pair putting together a 150-run stand before Rahul had to retire hurt on 77 due to cramps. That the century came after such a long international absence made it all the sweeter for Padikkal, since his previous Test appearance dated back to 2024, meaning he'd spent close to two years on the outside looking in. Padikkal earned his way back into contention the hard way, piling up runs across the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and IPL before finally getting the chance to show the same form on the international stage. He admitted to feeling the nerves creep in once he neared the milestone. “Patience for me, I think it was more to do with what I've gone through before this game," he said. "I think my last Test was in 2024. So it's been a long time coming, and I've had to patiently wait, look on from the outside. It's never easy. But at the same time, it gave me time to really work on my game and perfect things that needed perfecting. And I'm really glad that all that hard work came to effect today. It feels great." Padikkal wanted to pull off a risky double when on 98, but skipper Shubman Gill promptly sent him back. Gill took a single on the next ball, and Padikkal completed his century by pushing an easy single towards mid-on.  "I was a bit nervous towards the end when I got closer to it, but I think that's part of it, and I'm really happy to get over that," he said. "Especially this ground, I think even when we came here with the India SI, I got a few runs and even in the warm-up game, obviously I got some runs. So yeah, I guess it's a really special place for me, and glad to keep it going." MORE: Indian batters who have scored 100 on August 15 listed A hundred that says all about Padikkal's character, fitness, and mentality What stands out most about this innings isn't the shot-making; it's the sheer mental resilience Padikkal showed through conditions that, by his own account, were gruelling. Plenty of technically gifted batters fold under fatigue late in a long innings, losing shape and discipline exactly when it matters most. Padikkal didn't, and that's a far better indicator of Test match temperament than any highlight reel of boundaries could ever be. There's also something worth admiring in how he handled nearly two years out of the side. Rather than letting that stretch dent his confidence, he used it to improve his domestic numbers until selectors had no real argument left. This century isn't just a personal milestone; it's proof that patience, paired with hard work away from the spotlight, still counts for something in modern cricket. India will hope it's the start of a much longer run in the side for him.
