It’s been a will-they-won’t-they situation for the Los Angeles Rams and defensive tackle Aaron Donald over the past several weeks as the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year decides whether or not he will unretire from the league and play another season with the Rams. That situation seems to have progressed this week.
This week, Donald had a second “tryout” with the team as he undergoes the process of deciding whether or not he will return for another season in the league. While it’s certainly a unique situation, McVay added a bit of clarity this week.
Donald Unretire?
While Donald retired from the league following the 2023 NFL season, he has been considering returning to the team for another season as the Rams are expected to be one of the Super Bowl favorites heading into the 2026 season, especially following the team’s addition of two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett.
While no decision has been made just yet, Donald worked out with the Rams back on Aug. 5 to see how he felt and whether or not he would be physically able to return.
This week, he took another step in that direction.
Another Tryout
While Donald’s first workout with the Rams did not include any team equipment or personnel, which meant that the team would not have to report the workout to the league, a recent workout did.
This week, Donald had a workout that was officially reported to the league, as it included team equipment and personnel, which would presumably be another step toward a return. While McVay did not offer a lot of details, he did confirm the workout and add a little context.
“I’m not trying to be like, coy with it,” McVay said, Benjamin Royer of the ocregister.com. “It’s semantical. It’s part of his process that he’s going through. It just allows us to be able to use football equipment and it’s very similar to what the other workout was. . . . That was just another part of his process.”
Donald has not played since 2023. However, when he was in the league, he was one of the most dominant defensive tackles of all time.
