According to Matt Schneidman, Rodgers said he was “really hoping” the Pittsburgh Steelers’ preseason matchup with the Green Bay Packers would be played at Lambeau Field following last year’s meeting between the teams in Pittsburgh. Rodgers admitted he was “bummed out” when he learned that would not be the case. Instead, the Packers will travel to Acrisure Stadium on Thursday night for the Steelers’ preseason opener.

For Rodgers, the desire to return to Green Bay was about considerably more than football. The veteran quarterback spent the first 18 seasons of his career with the Packers, winning four MVP awards, a Super Bowl and establishing himself as one of the greatest players in franchise history. Rodgers told reporters that he wanted to play at Lambeau, visit his former trainer’s room, stop at his favorite restaurant, Chives, and even squeeze in a quick nine holes at Green Bay Country Club. The timing would have made the return particularly meaningful. Rodgers has already announced that the 2026 season will be the final of his NFL career, making any potential appearance at Lambeau as a player especially significant. Rodgers did get his first opportunity to face his former team last season when the Packers visited Pittsburgh. He has consistently maintained that his relationship with Green Bay remains positive, despite the complicated circumstances surrounding his departure from the organization. Now, rather than returning to the stadium where he built his Hall of Fame résumé, Rodgers will face the Packers in Pittsburgh alongside Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy, who also has deep ties to Green Bay. The matchup itself carries plenty of intrigue, but Rodgers’ comments make clear that the location matters to him. Lambeau Field was home for nearly two decades, and with his career nearing its conclusion, the chance to return there in uniform would have provided a rare opportunity to close that chapter on his own terms. Unfortunately for Rodgers, that opportunity will not come this preseason.
