Sports fans who watch ESPN enough will naturally eventually take a liking to the various personalities paid to provide their takes. Over time, some of those popular sports figures have to move on.

Like in July, when ESPN revealed its latest batch of layoffs, in which Ryan Clark lost his job, among others. Now, an analyst is calling out the popular four-letter network with a pretty pointed message.

Analyst: ESPN Sent ‘Alarming Message to Black Sports Community’

Clark was only part of ESPN’s initial layoff, but his departure generated a lot of discussion. Some of it is from Clark himself.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that former NFL offensive lineman Damien Woody will not continue with the network once his contract expires.

Now, Yussuf Khan of First and Pen is sounding off on ESPN’s tactics. Specifically, Khan suggests that by firing a “slew of Black talent” like Clark and Woody, they sent an “alarming message to the Black sports community.”

“ESPN said it wanted to remove politics from sports coverage, then fired a slew of Black talent, launched a college football show devoid of Black hosts and aired Tr**p’s Patriot Games.” First and Pen shared on X. “We say that’s an alarming message sent to the Black sports community.”

In the article, Khan expands on the theory by pointing out all the Black employees ESPN has moved on from.

“At a time where Black America is under attack by the corrupt and vindictive Tr**p administration, it’s distressing to see the World Wide Leader in Sports’ shedding of Black media talent,” Khan wrote. “In less than 10 years, ESPN has parted ways with Ryan Clark, Cam Newton, Bart Scott, Charles Davis, Andreas Hale, Jemele Hill, Michael Smith, Bomani Jones, Jalen Rose, Keyshawn Johnson, Robert Griffin III (RGIII), Mark Jackson and Shannon Sharpe.

Khan adds that even though many of the people named above have still found later success, the “on-air visuals” of their departures have been both “glaring and disturbing.”

“And while many have continued their successful media careers, the resulting on air visuals are both glaring and disturbing.”

Khan later contends that by moving on from so many Black voices, ESPN is making it “clear” about what type of audience they’re targeting.

“It’s true that people like Domonique Foxworth, Louis Riddick are Marcus Spears are still with the network,” Khan adds. “But when you release that many Black people then launch a new show devoid of Black talent and significantly beef up Pat McAfee’s presence (and paycheck), you’re clear about the audience you’re seeking… ESPN is making it clear that they are investing in ways to attract a specific audience with a specific look, one that lacks Melanin.”

The show Khan is referring to is “Bussin’ & Pate On Campus” with Josh Pate, and the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast hosts Taylor Lewan and Will Compton.

Khan concludes by writing, “And the latest rash of Black layoffs at ESPN only serves as further proof of why our voices, and the voices of others like us, are so sorely needed.”

Add it all up, and Khan feels like ESPN is taking a narrow approach to providing sports coverage, and that’s “alarming.”
