Aliyah Boston is the latest Indiana Fever player to deliver a strong message to the fans who booed head coach Stephanie White. White received a negative reaction from a portion of the home crowd when she was introduced before Indiana’s 106-92 win over the New York Liberty on Tuesday. Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham immediately defended their coach after the game.

Boston added her voice Thursday.

“I feel like there’s no reason for any of that,” Boston told reporters. “We come out here and we do everything we can to win, and I think Steph does a great job with us. We love her and we appreciate her.”

The Fever star did not stop there.

“So, to hear that, it was really annoying, honestly, and disrespectful,” Boston said. “But for us, we kept the main thing the main thing, and we said we were gonna come out here and get the dub.”

Indiana did exactly that, producing one of its most impressive offensive performances of the season against the defending champion Liberty.

Boston’s response followed similar comments from Clark and Cunningham.

“I don’t know why anybody would boo Steph,” Clark said after Tuesday’s victory. “I think that’s really hard for us to understand.”

The Red Sox are “going to talk through” bringing Roman Anthony back to Boston from Fort Myers, Chad Tracy said.

Clark explained that White has the complete support of the locker room. Cunningham also criticized the reaction and made it clear that the Fever players remained behind their coach. The boos followed days of controversy involving White’s response to the flagrant-2 foul DiJonai Carrington committed against Cunningham. Carrington was ejected after making contact with Cunningham during Indiana’s win over the Atlanta Dream.

Some fans wanted White to deliver a more forceful public defense of Cunningham after the play. White later became emotional while explaining that she always supports her players, even if she does not express herself in the way outside observers expect.

That explanation did not satisfy everyone. A small but audible portion of the Gainbridge Fieldhouse crowd booed White when her name was announced before the Liberty game.

The reaction clearly did not sit well with Indiana’s players.

Boston’s remarks showed that the frustration inside the locker room extends beyond Clark and Cunningham. The Fever’s core players see the criticism as unfair, especially considering the results White and her team have produced.

Fever continue winning amid off-court controversy

The timing of the backlash is particularly unusual because Indiana is playing some of its best basketball. The Fever improved to 21-12 by beating New York and have won 11 of their last 15 games. They scored 106 points against one of the WNBA’s top teams and continued strengthening their position in the playoff race.

Indiana’s performance also showed that the controversy had not created an obvious distraction on the court. Boston said the Fever remained focused on “the main thing,” and the players backed that up with their performance. Clark and Kelsey Mitchell led another explosive offensive effort, while Boston continued to provide production and stability in the frontcourt.

The result reinforced Boston’s point about White. The Fever are winning games, building chemistry and establishing themselves as a serious contender. White’s players have repeatedly praised the job she is doing, even as a segment of the fan base has questioned her handling of one emotionally charged incident.

White also has a lengthy connection to the organization. She played for the Fever and helped Indiana win the 2012 WNBA championship before later becoming the team’s head coach. She returned to Indiana after coaching the Connecticut Sun and has helped guide the Fever through their rise from rebuilding team to contender.

Players ultimately have a much closer view of White’s daily leadership than fans do. Three of Indiana’s most prominent players have now publicly supported her.

Boston sends clear message to Indiana fans

Fans have the right to disagree with coaching decisions and criticize how a team handles difficult situations. Boston believes the reaction Tuesday crossed a line.

Her comments were not vague. She described the boos as both “annoying” and “disrespectful” while emphasizing that the Fever love and appreciate White. The united response from Boston, Clark and Cunningham also makes it difficult to frame the controversy as a divide between White and her players. Everything they have said publicly points in the opposite direction.

Indiana will attempt to keep the focus on basketball when it hosts the Dallas Wings on Friday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The Fever enter that game with considerable momentum and one of the best records in the league. They also enter it with a clear message from their locker room.
