We’ve spent nearly two years waiting to see what MarShawn Lloyd can become. Tonight against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Packers may finally get a semi-meaningful opportunity to find out.

Lloyd has NFL talent, but can you guess how many regular season games he’s appeared in since being drafted in 2024?

If you guessed 1, please report to the stage after the article to get your fish fry coupon.

A recurring hamstring injury wiped out his 2025 season, while other injuries have repeatedly interrupted his development. As Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated noted ahead of Thursday’s preseason opener, there is still a fundamental question surrounding Lloyd: How good is he?

That question is difficult to answer on a practice field without live tackling. Tonight changes that.

The early returns from training camp have been encouraging. Packers.com reported in July that Lloyd had avoided setbacks after working with a California sports specialist and had rediscovered the burst and one-cut explosiveness that initially caught the attention of pro scouts.

Then came perhaps his biggest statement yet. With Josh Jacobs sidelined during an Aug. 6 practice, Lloyd scored twice while working with the first-team offense. He was subsequently admonished for an ensuing celebratory backflip. Though, I can’t say I blame him.

Offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich has confirmed Lloyd would play this preseason, noting that every healthy practice increases his confidence that the running back has moved beyond his injury problems.

The Packers need to see Lloyd catch the ball, protect Jordan Love, handle contact and, most importantly, finish the preseason healthy. If he can check those boxes while showcasing the explosiveness Green Bay has seen in practice, Lloyd could find himself a sneaky important player on this roster — for better or for worse.

Seven players who must steal the show for Packers vs. Steelers

The Green Bay Packers will face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night. From a big-picture perspective, here are the key players for the preseason opener.

Is rookie Brandon Cisse a lock to start at CB for Packers?

Two weeks into camp, everything about the cornerback position appears to have flipped.
