Rocky Flintoff made his England debut aged 16 years and 113 days [Getty Images] It is not just the name on Rocky Flintoff's shirt that is familiar. It is the stride to the crease with his helmet in one hand and the way he hits sixes over straight mid-wicket. Even the way he leans on his bat at the non-striker's end is a throwback to his father. After a headline-snatching first senior century on Tuesday, the 18-year-old's One-Day Cup drew to a close with 22 in Lancashire's defeat by Durham in the knockout stage on Friday. Eight matches, 315 runs and an average of 63. "Naturally pressure will follow him, unfortunately, because of his surname, but he has been up to the task so far," Lancashire coach Steven Croft told BBC Sport. "The way he has carried himself in this competition has been brilliant." Flintoff has been coached by his father in the England Lions set-up, but the iconic former all-rounder stepped down from his role as head coach earlier this month [Getty Images] Given the name - his father Andrew, or 'Freddie', as he is best known, played 227 times for England and had an iconic role in their 2005 Ashes win - and the talent, excitement around Flintoff is inevitable. David 'Bumble' Lloyd, who played for and coached England and Lancashire and was an early mentor to Flintoff senior, did little to dampen the talk this week, calling for the teenager to be "fast tracked" into the full international set-up after his brutal 123 against Somerset. "He's got everything," Lloyd said. "I think he's an international cricketer. "England have been pretty good in recent years in identifying talent and stretching and pushing them forward, and I think they can do that with Flintoff." The hype is not unfounded. Aged 16, Flintoff became Lancashire's youngest player and England Under-19s' and England Lions' youngest centurion - the latter feat achieved against a Cricket Australia XI featuring players more than 10 years his senior as he took the Lions record from his father. But, even at this early point, Flintoff's career has not been straightforward. Injuries, plus a preference for him to play England Under-19 matches last summer, meant he did not feature for Lancashire's first team at all in 2025. He has not played in the County Championship since averaging 12.42 across four matches in Lancashire's 2024 relegation season. And he is yet to feature in The Hundred - in which he was a wildcard pick at Northern Superchargers, where his father was coach last summer - or the T20 Blast. This good form, which also included 61 not out against Warwickshire and contributions of 33 or more against Leicestershire, Kent and Northamptonshire, has been timely. "That first hundred for him [against Somerset] is massive," Croft said. "To get his first one... I won't say out of the way... but now he knows he can do it at this level. "The next for him is to do it at first-class level. He is a very fast learner." Croft suggested a return to Lancashire's County Championship XI, where he would face higher quality bowlers compared to the Hundred-depleted One-Day Cup attacks, may not be far away. "He has put himself in a great position," Croft said. "The way he is striking the ball. He has stuck to what he is good at." Lancashire host Northamptonshire when the red-ball competition restarts on Thursday and travel to Worcestershire the week after. There are also five youth one-day internationals between England and Pakistan from 2 September, placing another decision is on the horizon. His parents are known to play a big role in that decision-making. And Flintoff is - like his father and 20-year-old older brother Corey, currently in Kent's second XI ranks - an all-rounder at heart. Bone stress issues in his back and pelvis have prevented him bowling his lively seam in a competitive match since his Under-16 days, but there remains careful quiet hope that could change by next summer, if the teenager comes through the rest of this season and the winter injury-free. Friday's knock at Old Trafford came against a Durham side featuring Ben Stokes. The prospect of a Flintoff succeeding Stokes, after Stokes succeeded a Flintoff, as England's all-rounder is tantalising if, at this point, a long way off. In truth, other England Under-19 contemporaries caught up while Flintoff struggled for first-team action and fitness. His superb innings at Taunton was ended by a catch from spin-bowling all-rounder Archie Vaughan - a Somerset regular at 20 and son of former England captain Michael. Elsewhere, Flintoff's Lancashire team-mate Joe Moores, Somerset wicketkeeper Thomas Rew, Middlesex's all-rounder Caleb Falconer and Hampshire pace bowler Manny Lumsden all featured in The Hundred in recent weeks. And batters Ben Dawkins and Ben Mayes, of Kent and Hampshire respectively, plus Surrey's spin bowling all-rounder Ralphie Albert - another with famous family heritage - have all featured this season's County Championship. With Rew, Dawkins and Mayes having already scored first-class centuries, it is a youth cohort some regard as England's best for a generation. You may think Flintoff would benefit from the flying under the radar, however unlikely that may be, but Croft does not appear overly concerned by the attention that comes. "I don't think he is one of them that will do some mindless scrolling," he said. "He is level-headed really. "It is always going to be a bit of a challenge, it is the way of the world these days. "But he has a good head on his shoulders, is a level kid and hopefully takes it all in his stride."
