'Tough Call': Shubman Gill addresses Gurnoor Brar vs Prasidh Krishna selection dilemma ahead of 1st Sri Lanka Test originally appeared on Cricket News. Add Cricket News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Shubman Gill called the decision on pace bowling between Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar a genuinely difficult one to make. Mohammad Siraj will lead India's pace attack in Galle.  The skipper backed struggling batters Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel, insisting India remains confident in its full squad.

Shubman Gill wants India's pace battery to step up and prove themselves against Sri Lanka in Jasprit Bumrah's absence Shubman Gill isn't hiding from a decision that's clearly been keeping him up at night, as on the eve of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, India's captain remains undecided on whom to pick between Prasidh Krishna and uncapped quick Gurnoor Brar. India look set to head into the opener with a spin-heavy attack, Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar offering orthodox left-arm options, and Kuldeep Yadav with his wrist-spin variety. That leaves just one seam-bowling slot up for grabs alongside Mohammad Siraj, who remains the one guaranteed name in the pace department. Auqib Nabi isn't really in the conversation, which narrows things down to a straight fight between the towering Brar, standing at 6-foot-5, and Prasidh, an inch shorter but far more experienced with seven Tests and 25 wickets already to his name. "Gurnoor Brar is excellent with the old ball as he can extract bounce at a good pace. But Prasidh Krishna is bowling well of late as we have seen in the warm-up match. So it's a tough call," Gill said. MORE: India’s Test return vs Sri Lanka comes with plenty of questions Losing Bumrah leaves a gap that's tough to paper over. He's been India's most reliable wicket-taker across pretty much every kind of surface for years now, and his absence through a knee injury changes the entire complexion of this attack. Galle typically hands spinners the upper hand, but even on turning tracks, picking up 20 wickets across five days demands patience and a fair bit of cunning from the seamers too. Gill, though, isn't framing this as a crisis. He sees it more as a door opening for someone else to walk through. “You have to keep trying different things to be able to take wickets, especially on subcontinent wickets, you know, you have to create opportunities, especially in day 1 and day 2," he said. "There could be a chance if there is not much happening from the wicket. So, how can you create pressure, you know, how can you not let the game slip away too much from you? So, yes, having those kinds of creative fields, and I think some of our bowlers- Bumrah is not here, but I think it is a really good opportunity for some of the other bowlers to really step up and make a mark on the series." Will Dhruv Jurel keep his place: What's happening with India's middle order? Gill also touched on the batting picture, where a couple of names have been under the microscope. Devdutt Padikkal looks set to slot in at No. 3, and with fellow left-hander Sai Sudharsan out of the frame, Dhruv Jurel keeps his middle-order spot despite a rough patch with the bat. That means Sarfaraz Khan will have to wait for his opportunity at least until the second Test in Colombo. The captain asked for patience on both fronts. "Players are going to grow on their own. We need to give time to them; some players require a bit of time," he said. MORE: IND vs SL Test series 2026 umpires: Full list of match officials He also brushed aside talk of any rift between the team management and the National Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru over player development, insisting communication lines remain open. "There is constant communication with them. Unfortunately, Sai Sudharsan did not improve as much as we liked, as we can't take risks in Tests. But we are confident of our 15 players," Gill said.

Backing youth over experience is the right call in Galle Gill's decision to lean toward Prasidh, and his broader message of patience for players like Jurel and Padikkal, deserves more credit than it's getting. It would've been easy to chase short-term certainty by picking the more conventional option every time, but Test cricket rewards teams willing to trust form over reputation, and that's exactly what's happening with the Prasidh-over-Brar call, based purely on recent bowling rather than raw pedigree. The Jurel situation is trickier, and there's a fair argument that patience has its limits when returns stay poor for too long. But wholesale changes mid-transition rarely fix anything; they just create fresh uncertainty somewhere else in the XI. MORE: India's 3-or-4 spinner dilemma ahead of 1st Test vs SL Gill seems to understand that stability, even through a rough patch, often pays off further down the line. Given India are already navigating a major bowling reshuffle without Bumrah, adding batting turmoil on top of it would be asking for trouble. Sticking with the process, even an imperfect one, looks like the smarter bet heading into a series this important.
