Liverpool are highly unlikely to sign a midfielder in the final two weeks of the summer transfer window, even if Curtis Jones is sold.

That’s according to David Lynch, who’s been speaking about the prospective ins and outs at Anfield as the 1 September deadline rapidly approaches.

The Reds’ number 17 has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks, with Fabrizio Romano claiming over the past 24 hours that Inter Milan are likely to submit another offer for the 25-year-old, who’s seemingly interested in a potential move to the Serie A champions.

Liverpool highly unlikely to sign a midfielder this summer

Lynch appeared on the Media Matters podcast for Anfield Index on Monday, and he effectively dismissed any possibility of another midfielder coming into Andoni Iraola’s squad during the remainder of the transfer window.

He explained: “I had a conversation this morning and I think, the way it was phrased to me, there is close to 0% chance of a midfielder being signed, even in the event of Curtis Jones leaving.”

Do Liverpool have enough midfield depth if Jones departs?

Liverpool have greater depth in midfield than most other parts of their squad, so in theory it wouldn’t seem disastrous if they were to lose Jones and not sign a replacement before the deadline.

However, with Stefan Bajcetic not having played in more than a year (and now being targeted by Getafe), Trey Nyoni excellent in pre-season but still only 19, and Wataru Endo likely to be used sparingly, the Reds mightn’t have a huge amount of wriggle room in the middle of the park.

Liverpool’s senior midfielders

It seems inevitable that one or more of our core midfield options will pick up injuries throughout the campaign, especially in hectic periods where we’re playing three matches in seven or eight days and squad depth is tested rigorously.

If Liverpool are to make any further signings for the rest of the transfer window, it’d most likely be Bradley Barcola or Ibrahim Mbaye, considering how persistently both Paris Saint-Germain wingers are being pursued.

Realistically it’s difficult to imagine another midfielder coming in, irrespective of Jones’ eventual fate, although we just hope that Richard Hughes doesn’t leave Iraola short in any position on the pitch by the time the market shuts on 1 September.
