Andoni Iraola Drops Liverpool Midfield Hint as Trey Nyoni Decision Emerges

Liverpool’s final pre-season exercise has offered an intriguing glimpse into Andoni Iraola’s plans, particularly when it comes to Trey Nyoni and the composition of his midfield for the Premier League opener.

Sunday’s unusual double header against Como allows Iraola to divide his squad, distribute minutes and, perhaps most significantly, reveal something about the hierarchy forming inside his new Liverpool team.

Nyoni’s inclusion in the starting XI for the behind closed doors game at the AXA Training Centre feels significant.

Trey Nyoni Earns Another Liverpool Opportunity

There can be few complaints about Trey Nyoni’s summer.

The teenager has impressed throughout pre-season, showing the technical quality and composure that have made him one of Liverpool’s most highly regarded young players.

His involvement against Como provides another opportunity to build fitness and make his case to Andoni Iraola. Yet the timing of his appearance may also provide a clue about what happens next.

Liverpool face Newcastle United at St James’ Park next Sunday, and Iraola is expected to field something close to his strongest available team in the second Como fixture at Anfield.

If Nyoni is playing substantial minutes earlier in the day, that naturally raises doubts over whether he is being prepared to start against Newcastle.

Gravenberch Looks Set for Midfield Role

Ryan Gravenberch appears increasingly likely to be part of Liverpool’s preferred midfield combination.

The Dutch international is expected to feature in the stronger Liverpool side against Como later on Sunday, which would place him firmly in contention for a starting role at St James’ Park.

That should not necessarily be interpreted as a setback for Nyoni.

At this stage of his development, being involved regularly around Liverpool’s senior squad represents considerable progress. Iraola also needs established players capable of handling the physical and tactical demands of an away Premier League opener.

Newcastle will offer exactly that sort of examination.

Iraola Uses Como Double Header to Shape Liverpool XI

For Andoni Iraola, the two Como games serve a purpose beyond simply completing pre-season.

Liverpool’s new head coach is still learning about his squad following his summer appointment, and these fixtures give him one final opportunity to experiment before competitive football begins.

Team selection therefore becomes particularly revealing.

Players involved prominently at Anfield later in the day can reasonably be viewed as those closest to Iraola’s thinking for Newcastle, while others may currently sit closer to the fringes of his starting XI.

Nyoni appears to fall into the latter category for now.

Premier League Chances Remain for Nyoni

That does not diminish what Trey Nyoni has achieved during Liverpool’s preparations.

Pre-season has strengthened his position inside the senior squad and given Iraola plenty to consider. The next challenge is converting promising performances into meaningful Premier League minutes.

Liverpool’s schedule will create opportunities, and midfield competition can change quickly through form, injuries and rotation.

For now, though, Sunday’s selection suggests Gravenberch has the advantage heading into Newcastle.

Nyoni remains part of the conversation, which at his age is significant progress in itself.
