The Tigers struggled in Pittsburgh but there is hope from the minors For one night in Pittsburgh, the most interesting Detroit Tigers developments might not have happened at PNC Park. Detroit lost 4-1 to the Pirates on Tuesday, but while I was watching the big-league club in Pittsburgh, there was plenty happening throughout a farm system that suddenly has several players worth keeping a close eye on over the final weeks of the season. Start in Toledo with Andrew Sears, because at this point it might be time to at least begin wondering if he could become a bullpen option for Detroit before the season is over. Sears took over for rehabbing left-hander Brant Hurter and absolutely dominated Iowa, throwing five scoreless, hitless innings with seven strikeouts and two walks as Toledo rolled to a 9-2 victory. This was not an isolated performance, either. In Sears' Triple-A debut last week, the 23-year-old left-hander threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. That gives him 9 2/3 scoreless innings, just two hits allowed and 14 strikeouts through his first two outings with Toledo. That is where this gets interesting for the major-league club. Sears has spent most of his professional career as a starter, but if Detroit is looking for another left-handed weapon for the bullpen down the stretch, his stuff and ability to miss bats could make him an intriguing candidate. There is a roster hurdle. Sears is currently not on Detroit's 40-man roster, so the Tigers would have to create a spot for him. Still, Sears has done about as much as someone can do in his first two Triple-A appearances to make the conversation worth having. And he wasn't the only pitcher making a notable Toledo appearance. Hayden Minton made his Triple-A debut, following Sears with a scoreless inning that included a walk and two strikeouts. Minton, Detroit's ninth-round selection in the 2023 draft, had posted a 3.15 ERA with 84 strikeouts over 80 innings in the minors this season before reaching Toledo. The Tigers have quietly pushed several arms upward recently, and Sears and Minton are two more names worth tracking as the organization gets a clearer picture of its pitching depth heading into 2027. Hope has his biggest night with Erie Then there was Zyhir Hope. The centerpiece position player acquired from the Dodgers in the Tarik Skubal trade had arguably his best offensive performance since joining the organization, going 4-for-5 with a home run, double, two runs scored and three RBIs in Erie's 6-5 loss to New Hampshire in 11 innings. Hope's two-run homer in the third gave Erie a 2-1 lead, but his night became even more impressive later. He singled and scored in the eighth, then delivered his fourth hit of the game with two outs in the ninth to tie the game. The home run was his 25th overall this season and second since joining Erie. There has naturally been plenty of focus on Hope since the deadline because of who Detroit gave up to acquire him. One big game doesn't settle any argument about the Skubal trade, nor should it. But this was a good example of the offensive ceiling that made Hope such an important part of the return in the first place. He's 21 years old, has legitimate power and athleticism, and Tuesday was one of those nights where all of it showed up at once. Yes, Rainer really did it again And just to verify something that sounds increasingly ridiculous: Bryce Rainer has now homered in four consecutive games. Technically, it is four straight games, not four straight days. Rainer homered for the third consecutive game Sunday, West Michigan had its normal Monday off day, and then he promptly went deep again Tuesday against South Bend. Rainer wasted almost no time extending the streak, crushing a solo home run to dead center in the first inning. MLB Pipeline already ranked Rainer as Detroit's No. 3 prospect and the No. 48 prospect in baseball entering Tuesday, and this current power surge is another reminder of why the 2024 first-round pick remains such an important piece of the system. West Michigan didn't generate much else offensively in the loss to South Bend, but Rainer certainly did his part. Back in Pittsburgh, Callahan provides Detroit's lone run Eventually we have to come back to PNC Park, where the Tigers didn't have nearly as much offensive success. Detroit managed only five hits in a 4-1 loss, dropping to 61-65 and remaining just a half-game out of the final American League wild-card position. There was at least one moment that fit perfectly with the minor-league theme of the night. Brett Callahan hit his first major-league home run, turning around a 97.8 mph Braxton Ashcraft fastball in the fifth inning and sending it 392 feet to right field. The ball came off Callahan's bat at 110.3 mph and temporarily gave Detroit a 1-0 lead. Keider Montero had been perfect through four innings, but Pittsburgh immediately answered in the bottom of the fifth. After Esmerlyn Valdez walked, Oneil Cruz hit a two-run homer to put the Pirates ahead 2-1. Montero ultimately allowed three earned runs on four hits over five innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Detroit never recovered. So the Tigers leave Tuesday having missed an opportunity to build on Monday's 8-5 victory, and every loss matters when you're living within a game of a playoff spot in the middle of August. But the bigger picture Tuesday wasn't completely negative. Sears looks increasingly intriguing in Toledo. Minton reached Triple-A. Hope produced his biggest offensive performance since becoming a Tiger. Rainer somehow homered again. And Callahan, who was playing in Toledo just days ago, hit his first major-league home run at PNC Park. For a night when the major-league result wasn't particularly memorable, the organization still gave us plenty to talk about.
