Angel Reese was ice cold to start Sunday night against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. Then she got hot, and she made sure everyone knew exactly how she felt about it.

Reese missed her first six shots and looked lost in the paint through most of the first quarter. But she flipped the switch late in the second, helping fuel a run that pushed Atlanta ahead at the half. During her live halftime interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe, Reese let an expletive slip on national television, and the network did not cut away in time.

“I was playing like s— in the beginning, but it’s a game of runs,” Reese said. “You gotta put that in your back pocket just because you know you have teammates that have your back.”

The comment aired uncensored, and clips spread across social media within minutes. Fans did not go easy on her.

“How are they gonna allow her to curse on TV? There are kids watching this, fine her,” one fan wrote, part of a wave of replies that ranged from mild annoyance to calls for league discipline.

Reese finished the first half with seven points on 3-of-10 shooting, nine rebounds and three assists. Not exactly clean numbers, but her fingerprints were all over Atlanta’s 7-0 closing burst that carried the Dream into the locker room with a four-point lead. Allisha Gray, Madina Okot and Rhyne Howard did the heavy scoring, and Reese credited all three by name in her interview.

Analyst Monica McNutt praised Reese’s shift in energy as the reason Atlanta’s defense picked up, while Chiney Ogwumike called it contagious. The read did not sit well with Fever fans who watched Reese shoot 3-of-10 while Clark quietly matched her production on far fewer misses. Complaints about ESPN’s coverage piled up right alongside complaints about the language.

Clark, meanwhile, was doing her usual damage. She scored 10 first-half points and dished five assists, right in line with her season average, even as turnovers piled up around her. The Fever shot just 3-of-13 from three in the half, a cold spell that let Atlanta hang around.

With the score tied at 81-81 in the closing seconds of regulation, she grabbed an offensive rebound with a clean look at the rim and a chance to win it outright. She missed it. Naz Hillmon could not clean up the loose ball either, and the game rolled into overtime.

Caitlin Clark’s Laugh Became The Real Story After The Buzzer

ESPN’s cameras caught what happened next. As Reese buried her face in her hands, Clark walked past her toward the bench with a visible smile, unable to hide her amusement at her rival’s misfortune. The moment went viral almost as fast as the curse word had.

Commentator Jason Whitlock piled on afterward, posting bluntly on social media that “Angel Reese is a comedy show.” However, Whitlock also picked Reese over Clark a few weeks ago. Reese still finished with a respectable double-double, 15 points, 14 rebounds and six assists, but on 5-of-16 shooting that told its own story about the night.

Indiana closed it out in overtime behind Kelsey Mitchell, who hit a go-ahead layup with 13.6 seconds left to seal a 95-91 win, the Fever’s fourth straight. Clark finished with 26 points and nine assists, continuing to own the moments that matter most against Atlanta.

None of this changes what Reese is this season, a three-time All-Star still putting up career numbers inside. The rivalry with Clark has followed both players since their college days at LSU and Iowa, through two national championship meetings and now three WNBA seasons of matchups that rarely stay quiet. But nights like this one are starting to define the story just as much as the stat sheet does, one rough quarter and one hot mic at a time.

Atlanta will have little time to dwell on it. The Dream hit the road Tuesday to open a four-game trip against A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces, a far tougher measuring stick than Sunday’s rivalry game.
