Angel Reese produced another double-double for the Atlanta Dream on Sunday, but two moments near the basket attracted far more attention than her complete performance.
The first came in transition, when Reese finished a fast break with an emphatic-looking play that quickly circulated online. House of Lowlights sarcastically labeled the finish an “Angel Reese fast break dunk” on X, adding more fuel to the constant scrutiny surrounding her offense.
The second moment was far more important.
With Atlanta and the Indiana Fever tied at 81 in the closing seconds, Rhyne Howard missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer. Reese collected the offensive rebound underneath the basket and had a clean opportunity to end the game.
Her layup hit the backboard and then the front of the rim before falling away. Naz Hillmon grabbed another offensive rebound, but her desperation attempt also missed as time expired.
Indiana went on to win 95-91 in overtime.
Angel Reese’s missed layup proved costly
Reese finished with 15 points, 14 rebounds and six assists, helping Atlanta erase a nine-point second-quarter deficit. She was especially important during the Dream’s 17-4 run to close the first half.

Those contributions should not be dismissed because of one missed shot. At the same time, the criticism of the final attempt is fair. Reese had possession directly underneath the basket with enough time to gather herself and convert a shot she is expected to make. Atlanta could not have asked for a much better opportunity after Howard’s initial miss.
The play also magnified Reese’s overall inefficiency. She shot 5-for-16 from the field, continuing a familiar pattern in which her rebounding and activity generate opportunities that she does not always finish.
That remains the most obvious area of her game requiring improvement. Reese is one of the WNBA’s most dominant rebounders and has made significant strides as a passer. Her six assists Sunday demonstrated her ability to create offense without scoring. However, Atlanta needs more reliable finishing from a frontcourt player who spends so much time around the rim.

One miss should not erase productive performance
Reese naturally receives more attention than most players, meaning her awkward sequences and missed shots are likely to spread quickly across social media.
That can produce exaggerated criticism.
Atlanta would not have been in position to win without Reese’s 14 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. She helped create extra possessions and contributed to the comeback that gave the Dream three chances to win at the end of regulation. Still, star players are judged by late-game execution. Reese secured the rebound Atlanta needed but failed to complete the decisive play.
The miss did not single-handedly cost the Dream the game. Atlanta had other opportunities, allowed Indiana to tie the score late and was outplayed in overtime.
It was, however, a painful missed chance in a game with significant playoff implications. Reese accomplished plenty Sunday. Unfortunately for her, the moment everyone will remember is the one she could not finish.
