Anthony Gordon reveals why he chose Barcelona: ‘Was already familiar with Flick’s philosophy’

Anthony Gordon is only a few days into his Barcelona career, but the English winger already appears to be enjoying his new surroundings.

Ahead of the 61st edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al-Ahly, Gordon and fellow summer signing Karim Adeyemi took centre stage for the traditional photograph with the trophy.

Speaking to the club’s media after the picture, the 25-year-old reflected on his first week at the club, the reason behind his decision to join Barcelona and what he hopes to achieve when he finally steps onto the pitch.

“My first week as a Barça player has been incredible.

“It’s a new city, a new country, obviously new teammates, new staff… but it’s been an incredible experience. Everyone has made me feel very welcome,” he explained.

Flick’s football played a major role in Gordon’s decision

Moving to Barcelona was not simply about joining one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Gordon admitted that Hansi Flick’s style of football was already familiar to him before the move, and the chance to play under the German coach was one of the main reasons he wanted to become part of the project.

“I was already familiar with the manager’s philosophy, which is why I wanted to come here – because I like this style of play,” said Gordon.

Notably, Flick’s system uses the wingers to stretch defences, attack space and contribute when Barcelona press without the ball, and Gordon’s pace and direct approach appear suited to that style.

Gordon wants more than just a warm welcome

Speaking further, the Englishman did not hide his excitement about experiencing his new home and meeting the fans.

“I’m really excited to see the stadium, pull on the Barça shirt and be with the fans.”

But Gordon is not approaching the match as simply an introduction. The winger has already set himself a clear target for the occasion.

“I hope to score a goal and win the match.”

Before ending his interview, the former Newcastle United winger addressed the fans who have welcomed him since his move was completed.

“Thank you for everything you’ve done for me so far, for all the love and support.

“I hope to repay you with lots of goals and lots of trophies. Thank you very much,” he concluded.
