The Chargers weren't mentioned as one of the teams that called for Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea. Prior to Friday's slate of preseason games, NFL insider Mike Garafolo reported that the Bills, Bears and 49ers inquired about Vea's availability. “Teams have called the Buccaneers to see if they're interested in trading [Vita Vea],” Garafolo said. “Amongst them is the Bills, the Bears, the 49ers, and there are a few others as well. But the Buccaneers continue to say, internally, they are not trading Vita Vea.” While the Chargers weren't mentioned by name, Garafolo said teams have checked in on Vea. The Chargers could be part of that bunch, or they may not. Garafolo also added that the Buccaneers remain 'steadfast' that they're not going to trade the Pro Bowl defensive tackle. Vea, 31, is entering the final year of his four-year, $71 million contract extension that he signed in 2022. He requested a trade from the Buccaneers early in training camp; however, Tampa Bay is reluctant to respect his wishes. When Vea first requested a trade, it was reported that he was interested in one of the three California teams or the Raiders. The 49ers appear to be the only team from that initial list to make a true move on the former Super Bowl champion. Vea has established himself as one of the best run-stuffers and interior pocket collapsers. Those traits would elevate the Chargers' defensive line significantly. With the Buccaneers unlikely to trade Vea, the Chargers may need to offer a significant package to pry him away, something general manager Joe Hortiz likely won't want to do.
