According to a report from Jacob Tanswell of The Athletic (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Aston Villa is still working toward trying to secure a deal for Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha:
Aston Villa have resumed talks to sign João Palhinha from Bayern. Despite interest from Newcastle, Villa still believe they can finalise an agreement for the midfielder, seeking a season-long loan with an option to buy.
Later, Chris Waugh of The Athletic (via @iMiaSanMia) reported that Newcastle United might be feeling as if it has struck out on Palhinha:
Newcastle’s attempts to sign Palhinha have proven fruitless – it’s not appearing likely to advance at this stage
There is a report indicating that Benfica has already agreed to personal terms with Palhinha and that it could have presented a fair offer to Bayern Munich as well. If so, Aston Villa might have to seek to outbid Benfica and also convince Palhinha that a move back to England is the right move.
One area where Aston Villa could win over the veteran is with salary, where Benfica’s proposal to Palhinha was far lower than his current salary.
