During Sunday’s Atlanta Dream-Indiana Fever game, some fans were allegedly instructed by league security to cover up statement shirts with messaging related to the debate on transgender athletes. According to an Associated Press report, two of these shirts (which came from the XX-XY line) bore a message that supported female athletes, while another shirt expressed solidarity with transgender people.

After the WNBA released a statement on Monday to clarify that this incident “should not have happened,” the Dream tweeted a statement of their own.

“The Atlanta Dream believes in creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. Unfortunately, at last night’s game, WNBA security took actions that fell short of that standard. At no point was Dream personnel involved in the decisions made by WNBA security.”

This incident is the latest controversy to ensue as the raging discourse on biological males’ participation in the WNBA continues. Fans, analysts, and even WNBA coaches have weighed in on this discussion, which took off in earnest after Fever guard Sophie Cunningham publicly commented that biological males should not have to compete in women’s sports.

Though Cunningham and her teammates pulled off a 95-91 victory over the Dream on Monday, the basketball discourse was once again overshadowed by an incident that had little to do with the actual game on the floor.

That same day, major news outlets like Fox News and The New York Post reported that Cunningham’s name had been banned from post titles in the r/WNBA subreddit. In a statement to USA Today, the WNBA has denied having any affiliations with this subreddit.

“These Are the Games You Get Up For”: Caitlin Clark Comments on Competitive Matchup Between Atlanta Dream and Indiana Fever

The game between the Atlanta Dream and the Indiana Fever was a competitive encounter that went down the wire. In the overtime period, the Fever outgunned the Dream 14-10 to seal the victory.

After the game, Clark gave props to the Dream and had positive things to say about the matchup between the two teams.

“For us, these are the games you get up for. That’s what’s fun about competition. You wanna play the best. It brings out the best in you.”

Clark, who finished with 26 points, three rebounds, and nine assists, added that the Dream could be a “scary” team in the postseason.
