High school football is back and the state of Georgia grabbed a majority of the headlines during its opening weekend of regular season action. The Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic brought some notable programs to Atlanta to begin their seasons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
On Thursday, Brookwood got off on the right foot and steamrolled Cambridge to the tune of 52-7. Pacing the Broncos out of Snellville was their senior quarterback, three-star Auburn commit Gary Chatman.

His services were not needed for four quarters. Chatman needed just eight completions to rack up over 150 yards and two scores through the air. The dual-threat signal-caller also broke off a long touchdown run to help his team pull away in the first half. Chatman caught the attention of many, including Rivals Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons.
“They came out and were really in cruise control for most of that game,” Simmons said of Brookwood in an appearance on ‘The Inside Scoop’. “(Chatman) only played limited snaps going into the second half, but when he did play, he was dynamic, having 162 yards passing, two passing touchdowns, had a couple other passes dropped … he ran one for 31 yards, showing his mobility and athleticism.”
Chatman was named Simmons’ offensive MVP from the event. Rivals high school analyst Andy Villamarzo was also impressed by the senior, applauding his timing when the football was in his hands. There was no rust to knock off for Brookwood.
Chatman enters the fall ranked as the No. 1,146 overall prospect and No. 60 QB in the 2027 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies. Rankings aside, Simmons thinks Auburn may have a potential star on its hands with the Peach State passer.
“He was committed to Wake Forest at one time. Auburn came in to see him early in the spring, offered him, flipped his commitment,” Simmons said. “To me, this could be a steal for Alex Golesh and the Auburn Tigers.”
After its statement win to open the season, Brookwood is now the No. 14 team in Georgia, per the Massey Ratings. Its next game and home-opener is set for Aug. 28 against No. 24 Mill Creek (Ga.). Along with Chatman, the Broncos’ roster also features senior four-star running back Brayden Tyson, who rushed for three scores in the win over Cambridge.
