Auston Matthews appears to be making strong progress from the knee injury that ended his 2025-26 NHL season. Shawn Robek, Matthews’ personal sports chiropractor, has worked with him throughout his rehabilitation. Robek said the Maple Leafs captain is approaching the new season with energy and optimism. “I’m helping take care of his knee,” Robek said on First Up. “I was part of the team in addressing the soft tissue structures associated with that injury.” MORE: Jay Rosehill revisits Patrik Laine’s Auston Matthews-level draft hype amid Maple Leafs rumors Matthews suffered a Grade 3 MCL tear and quadriceps contusion after a knee-on-knee collision with Radko Gudas in March. He finished the season with 27 goals and 53 points across 60 games. Robek explained that his work focused on restoring movement and improving the function of Matthews’ knee. “It’s my job to clean up those tissues, make sure the joints are moving well,” Robek said. “And teach him some intentional corrective exercise so we can make sure the joints are functioning optimally.” The update provides an encouraging sign for Toronto after Matthews missed the final stretch of another difficult season. His availability could determine how much the revamped roster can achieve. The shared approach aims to ensure the center returns without lingering movement issues. “A number of specialists that are all on the same page and trying to make sure that Austin gives 100% and can perform at his best,” Robek said. “And so in working with him and being a part of this team, it’s been quite a unique process.” The chiropractor also offered a positive assessment of Matthews’ mindset during rehabilitation. “It’s fun seeing Austin come in with energy and a smile and optimism,” Robek said. “He’s ready to go and he’s very energetic, and it’s going to be a fun season to watch.” That optimism matters for Toronto, but the team still needs Matthews to prove his durability during training camp. The captain has dealt with injuries during consecutive seasons, limiting his availability and production. MORE: Maple Leafs’ 2026-27 hopes ride on core stars delivering again Toronto also reshaped its roster after missing the playoffs last season. The organization added new pieces while expecting Matthews to lead the offensive core. Matthews’ health remains the biggest variable. William Nylander, John Tavares and Toronto’s younger forwards can provide support, but he drives the lineup’s ceiling. If Robek’s assessment translates into full training-camp participation, Toronto can enter the season with its most important player available. The next test will come when Matthews returns to game action. — Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter —
