Pakistan have confirmed that Babar Azam will not be available for the first Test against England, which begins at Headingley on August 19, 2026. Salman Agha has been named as captain for the match in his place.

According to the Pakistan team management announcement on August 18, 2026, Babar was struck on his right hand during the tour warm-up fixture at Beckenham. That blow aggravated the same hand he had injured in the second Test against West Indies earlier in August, and the combined damage has been judged serious enough to rule him out of the series opener.

Babar had returned to the Test captaincy from Shan Masood at the start of the West Indies series, so his absence at Headingley leaves Pakistan without their reinstated Test skipper for the first match of the England tour. The Pakistan team management confirmed the development on August 18, a day before the Test was due to begin.

Why has Babar Azam been ruled out of the Headingley Test?

Babar's right hand was first hurt during the second Test against West Indies in August 2026. He had not fully recovered from that blow when Pakistan arrived in England for their tour, and the Beckenham warm-up fixture brought a fresh impact to the same hand.

After assessment, the Pakistan team management determined that the injury was too significant for Babar to take the field at Headingley. The official confirmation came on August 18, 2026, one day before the Test was scheduled to start. No timeline for his return to the side has been provided in the available evidence, and his availability for the remaining matches of the England series remains unconfirmed.

Who is Salman Agha and what does this captaincy mean for Pakistan?

Salman Agha is Pakistan's T20I captain and has now been handed the Test captaincy for the first time. His appointment at Headingley marks his maiden Test leadership assignment, a notable step up from the shortest format in which he has already led the national side.

"Pakistan captain Babar Azam is unavailable for the first Test match. Salman Agha will be the captain for the first Test," said Sarfaraz Ahmed as quoted by Cricinfo.
