India and Sri Lanka were locked in a tense contest at Galle International Cricket Stadium on Day 4, with Sri Lanka chasing 288 runs. The hosts had lost four wickets and were on 84 for 4 when a contentious moment shifted the momentum of the match. Dhruv Jurel, India's fielder, took a catch that would spark significant debate about whether the ball had touched the ground during the fielding action.

Lahiru Udara was dismissed for 16 off 58 balls after Manav Suthar delivered the ball towards the gully region. Jurel moved quickly and grabbed the ball with his right hand, completing what appeared to be a straightforward catch. However, the moment raised immediate questions about whether Jurel's fingers had remained underneath the ball throughout the catch or if the ball had made contact with the ground as his hand moved forward. The third umpire, Raveendra Wimalasiri, settled the debate by ruling that the fingers were underneath the ball.

Russel Arnold, the former Sri Lankan cricketer and commentator, questioned the third umpire's decision in his analysis of the dismissal. Arnold's assessment suggested that the visual evidence from slow-motion replays indicated the ball had made contact with the ground, contradicting the on-field ruling.

"It's been pushed along the ground for a bit. The ball was pushed along the ground. You can see, it was pushed along. When you look at that slow-motion replay, it seems that the fingers were pushed back and the front of the ball was touching the ground," Arnold was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Why did Russel Arnold question the decision?

Udara himself appeared unconvinced by the decision and seemed reluctant to leave the crease immediately after the dismissal. His reaction underscored the uncertainty surrounding the catch. The incident highlighted the challenges faced by match officials when reviewing close catches, particularly when slow-motion replays can appear to show different angles and perspectives of the same moment.

India had posted 462 and 193 in their two innings, with Rishabh Pant scoring 66 off 69 balls in the second innings. Sri Lanka's first-innings total stood at 284. On Day 4, Mohammed Siraj, Manav Suthar and Prasidh Krishna took wickets as India pressed for victory.

The controversial dismissal of Udara left Sri Lanka needing to rebuild their innings while India sought to secure the remaining wickets required to win the match.
