Bangladesh defeated Australia by 9 wickets in the first Test in Darwin on August 16, 2026, to etch their name into cricket history. The victory, achieved in just their third Test on Australian soil, makes them the quickest Asian team to register a maiden Test win in the country, a record no other Asian nation has come close to matching.

The result is Bangladesh's second Test win in SENA countries. Their first came in New Zealand at Mount Maunganui in 2022. It is also only the second time Bangladesh have beaten Australia in seven meetings across all venues, with the other occasion being the 2017 Mirpur Test. The match ran from August 13 to 16, 2026.

By margin, the 9-wicket result ranks as Bangladesh's second-biggest Test victory in terms of wickets. Only their 10-wicket win over Pakistan in Rawalpindi in 2024 surpasses it.

How does Bangladesh's record compare with other Asian teams in Australia?

The scale of Bangladesh's achievement becomes clearer when set against the historical record of other Asian nations down under. Pakistan took seven Tests before they managed their first win, while India needed 12 attempts to achieve the same. Sri Lanka, despite a long history of Test cricket, are yet to win in Australia after 15 attempts, making Bangladesh's three-Test turnaround a genuinely significant marker in Asian cricket.

Which performances drove Bangladesh's historic win in Darwin?

Hasan Mahmud was the decisive figure with the ball, claiming 6 wickets for 55 runs in Australia's first innings. That effort restricted the hosts to a total Bangladesh were able to overhaul with considerable authority, and Mahmud was named Player of the Match for his contribution.

Tanzid Hasan anchored the batting effort with 101 off 197 balls in Bangladesh's first innings. His century placed Bangladesh in a commanding position, and they eventually knocked off the target for the loss of just one wicket.

The Darwin win has also strengthened Bangladesh's position in the ICC World Test Championship standings. They are placed fourth with a points conversion rate of 66.67 PCT, a reflection of the consistency they have shown across different conditions in recent Test cricket.
