Barcelona generate around €50 million FFP space by selling Spanish forward – report

Barcelona have completed the sale of Ferran Torres to PSG, with the Spanish forward leaving to reunite with Luis Enrique.

The Catalan club ran the risk of seeing the World Cup hero leave for free at the end of next season and chose to cash in after he expressed his desire to move.

Ferran leaves after four and a half seasons at the Catalan club, which were a mixed bag, but after arguably his two best seasons at Barça.

Now, according to SPORT, the former Manchester City forward’s move to PSG has handed Barça a massive financial boost.

The operation is expected to generate around €50 million in FFP for the Catalans, which could help them with their own signings this summer.

How Ferran generates €50 million in FFP space

Barcelona signed Ferran from Manchester City in January 2022 for €55 million, handing him a five-and-a-half-year contract running until 2027.

That left the club with an annual amortisation cost of approximately €10 million.

With Ferran departing one year before the end of his contract, Barça still had around €10 million of his original transfer fee left to amortise.

The forward has now been sold to PSG for close to €50 million.

After subtracting the remaining €10 million book value, Barcelona are therefore expected to record an accounting profit of roughly €40 million from the transfer.

There is then another important saving: Ferran’s wages.

The Spain international was earning approximately €10 million gross per season. Removing the final year of those wages takes the overall FFP impact of his departure to around €50 million.

For Barcelona, that makes the transfer considerably more valuable than simply receiving a large fee.

Rodri and Adeyemi could benefit

Perhaps the most significant detail is what Barça can now do with that additional room.

The report estimates that signing Rodri for around €70 million on a four-year contract, assuming a gross annual salary of €20 million, would create an FFP cost of approximately €37.5 million.

Karim Adeyemi, meanwhile, is estimated to require another €16.4 million.

Combined, the two would represent an impact of around €53.9 million under those assumptions.

Ferran’s departure alone could therefore almost compensate for the FFP requirements of registering both players.

For a club still navigating financial hurdles, a sale like this could go a long way towards setting the club up for the future.

A very different Barcelona transfer window

Unlike previous summers dominated by emergency financial measures and uncertainty surrounding registrations, the club entered this market operating under La Liga’s 1:1 rule.

Robert Lewandowski’s departure has already removed a substantial salary from the wage bill, while Ferran now provides another major injection of flexibility through both accounting profit and salary savings.

Barcelona are still being careful and have not rushed to register every new arrival, but the situation is considerably healthier than in recent years.

Selling Ferran was a major sporting decision, particularly after his excellent recent form. Financially, however, its importance is becoming increasingly clear.

The club, meanwhile, have already signed Anthony Gordon and Adeyemi, with Rodri and Joao Cancelo expected to be on the way.

If Barça play their cards right, they could have an excellent end to the transfer window, and it remains to be seen how Deco goes about it.
