Wales' Hockey World Cup campaign got off to a battling start as they were beaten 3-1 by India. Sanjay Rana opened the scoring for India on seven minutes when his penalty corner crept underneath Toby Reynolds-Cotterill and captain Harmanpreet Singh doubled the lead three minutes later from another penalty corner. Daniel Kyriakides' outstanding long pass found Jack Pritchard in the second quarter but the Welshman hit the outside of the post after rounding the goalkeeper. Singh got his second and India's third in the third quarter. Suraj Karkera saved brilliantly from Gareth Furlong's penalty corner before Sam Welsh bundled home a consolation goal for Wales in the fourth quarter. The game was a tale of penalty corners with Wales earning their first and only attempt after 54 minutes. Furlong's shot forced a brilliant save to give a glimpse of their set-piece firepower. India, meanwhile, converted three of five penalty corners to ensure they celebrated their country's independence day with victory at the Wagener Hockey Stadium. They are seeking to win the men's Hockey World Cup for their second time in their history, 50 years after their 1976 triumph in Kuala Lumpa, Malaysia. Wales co-captain Jacob Draper was an inspiring figure as he earned his 100th Welsh Test cap during the match. The 28-year-old, a veteran of two Olympic Games, has also played 63 times for Great Britain and plays his club hockey for Pinoke in Amsterdam. His defensive work and organisation kept Wales in the game before Welsh's late goal gave the side reward for their resolve. India had beaten Wales 4-2 in their previous World Cup meeting in January 2023 and this game was similarly competitive despite the gap in world rankings. Wales are ranked 15th with only Japan ranked lower than Danny Newcombe's side at the tournament. As part of a largely amateur programme, many of the squad have full-time jobs or study and players are responsible for funding their own international travel. Rhodri Furlong will join Draper on 100 caps if he plays against world number 12 side Pakistan on Monday. The top two sides in the pool progress to the second round, while the teams who finish third and fourth in their pool will contest 9th-16th classification matches against the bottom two sides in Pool A. Wales finished tied for 11th at the 2023 World Cup in India after beating France in a shootout before suffering a defeat by Argentina. Men's Hockey World Cup Pool D fixtures Saturday, 15 August India 3-1 Wales England v Pakistan (18:00 BST) Monday, 17 August Pakistan v Wales (11:30 BST) India v England (14:00 BST) Wednesday, 19 August England v Wales (11:30 BST) Pakistan v India (14:00 BST)
