Welcome to the FC Bayern Campus Round Up, where the matches of Bayern Munich’s U-23, U-19 and U-17 squads are recapped, line ups are provided and the highlights to the matches are hyperlinked on top of their respective score line. The league seasons of both the U-17s and U-19s has finally started. Remember, to watch highlights one needs to have established an account on the website but there is no need to spend any money.

Information on the matches of the U-23, U-19 and U-17 teams is provided by the official FC Bayern website here, here and here, respectively. If you wish to learn more about the format of the U-17 and U-19’s youth leagues and what is at stake, you can find more info here. Without further ado, here is the round up:

FC Bayern II (U-23s) 1-1 1. FC Schweinfurt, Matchday 3

Bayern lineup (with subs): Bärtl – Schmitz, Heindl (65. Mijatović), Pavlić, Ajayi – Lambe (83. Matosevic), Gashi (75. Codjo-Evora), Olychenko – Wilson (65. Scott), Heinz, Srb (75. Mike).

Goals: 1:0 Heindl (12.), 1:1 Dellinger (36.).

Unused subs: Klanac – Schäfer, Hennig, Sadat.

Injured players: Louis Richter, Leonard Prescott, Tarek Buchmann, Chivano Wijks, Younes Aitamer

Position: 15., 1 point

If you do not finish your chances, the opposition remains in the game.

It was this lesson that Dante’s young group learned the hard way as they welcomed last season’s 20th placed 3. Liga team, 1. FC Schweinfurt, to their stadium. The personnel situation remained mostly the same for Dante, as the likes of Bastian Assomo and Filip Pavić did not return from their adventures in Hong Kong time for the fixture, though 22-year-old defensive leader David Heindl was fit enough to start again. New signing Matouš Srb and Ukrainian youngster Bogdan Olychenko made their first starts of the season, pushing captain Benno Schmitz to RB, while Wisdom Mike made his long awaited comeback after 5 months out with injury. With this group, the Brazilian head coach aimed to finally break his losing streak (4 friendlies, 2 competitive games lost in a row).

The team started strongly, too, as the highlights will show. They created a glut of decent opportunities, with the returning Heindl heading the best one into the back of the net in the 12th minute to take the lead for the very first time this season. They were dominating possession, controlling the game and creating chances.

Then the equalizer came.Schweinfurt attacked Bayern’s defense at speed, Heindl completely lost his man and Dellinger headed it in to level the scores.

As has happened in too many of the previous games, the U-23s wilted. Their momentum and confidence halted, it was clear they were not playing with the kind of freedom and confidence they were prior to the equalizer. Not helped by the heat of the midday encounter, the game slowed to a crawl and both teams struggled to create further chances. Bayern still posed some threat through a free kick from Heinz here, an effort from distance there, but all in all created too little to regain the lead. The game ended 1-1.

At the very least, Dante’s men have broken their losing streak and won their first point of the season. They outclassed Schweinfurt for around half an hour and could have built up a solid lead. The team continues to take a step forward each game. But they do really need to get a win soon.

Bayern U-19s 4-0 SpVgg Unterhaching U-19s, Matchday 1

Bayern lineup (with subs): Ruland – Nuraj (63. Moumouni), Gashi, Karandrikas, Horvath – Matosevic, Snip (63. Maric), Schaff (63. Horoszczak) – Av. Hentcho Nseke (55. Afanou), von Taube, Ar. Hentcho Nseke (55. Imade).

Goals: 1:0 Philipp von Taube (13.), 2:0 Wisdom Mark Imade (72.), 3:0 Philipp von Taube (84.), 4:0 Michael Matosevic (89.).

Unused subs: Nadler

Position: 1., 3 points

In what was billed as one of the biggest challenges for Bayern’s U-19s in the first phase of the season, the Bavarians comprehensively trounced Unterhaching 4-0. Coming off of last week’s last minute comeback win in the first round of the Youth Cup, Bayern had a much simpler time polishing off a win against their rivals as they simply outplayed and outlasted their opponents.

Bayern did require some luck to keep their clean sheet early on, as only a combination of goalkeeper Leonard Ruland and the woodwork kept the ball from hitting Bayern’s net in the second minute. From then on, though, the home team dominated, taking the lead through striker von Taube and creating a glut of chances that sadly did not end up in the back of the net.

Unlike the U-23s, however, the U-19s were not punished for their profligacy because their performance remained very good from start to finish. The first 20 minutes after halftime were perhaps a little more even, but the visitors still rarely threatened. Then Bayern started to turn the screws and eventually got the second goal through an inspired individual effort by winger Wisdom Imade. Further goals from von Taube and captain Michael Matosevic sealed the win.

In general, multiple players impressed. New signing Karandrikas showed exactly the qualities Bayern signed him for, demonstrating an ease on the ball and a steadiness in defense. Michael Matosevic had his careless moments but also his better ones, showcasing strong technique and ending the match with a brilliant volley under pressure. Wisdom Imade’s ball control and dribbling are deceptively strong for a player of his size. Chris Afanou demonstrated some mature decision making and power after coming off of the bench, demonstrated by the way he so calmly waited for the perfect time to cross the ball to von Taube for the third goal. And, of course, the match winner von Taube impressed as well, bagging a double and gliding through the match with his elegant technique.

Assomo and von Taube are both top tier striker talents. It is clear Bayern rate Assomo higher, given he is with the U-23s and von Taube at the U-19s for now despite the latter being older, but they are both very good and it is clear they have so much potential. What makes the duo interesting how different they are. Assomo is more of a classic striker and his best qualities remain his incredible speed and strength at such a young age, while he is still working on his technique. Meanwhile, von Taube can sometimes struggle to use his body in the efficient ways Assomo does in challenges but shines with his technique, at times reminding of Bayern star forward Harry Kane in the way he drops deep and facilitates play. Bayern can be happy to have them both…as well as U-17 star striker talent Vedad Turbic. Speaking of Turbic and his team…

FC Augsburg U-17s 0-3 Bayern U-17s, Matchday 1

Bayern lineup (with subs): Röhlk – Herber (87. Nduka), Fichtl, Schreyer (87. Ebert), Atüz – Ciglar (60. Mahr), Mujic, Zubovic – Ludwig (73. Dachgruber), Abade (60. Rieber), Krasniqi.

Goals: 0:1 Atakan Eütz (38.), 0:2 Deni Zubovic (52.), 0:3 Atakan Eütz (75.).
