Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has rather ambitious goals for this season. Not only does he want to lead the Bears to a Super Bowl victory, but he wants his offense to be the highest-scoring in the history of the NFL. "You’ve got 31 other teams coming to training camp saying, 'Our goal is to win the Super Bowl,'" Johnson said. "I want more than that. I want to have the highest-scoring offense ever, which happens to be the 2013 Denver Broncos. I know how many points per game they scored [37.9], and I want to surpass them. I want shutouts. I want blowouts." Topping 37.9 points per game seems impossible on its face, but Johnson’s offense put up 441 points last season, the third-most in franchise history. Chicago also put up an average of 36 points per game with George Halas as head coach back in 1941 although the regular season was only 11 games.
Since the NFL adopted the 17-game schedule, the most points scored per game was the 2024 Detroit Lions with 33.2 points per game. That was also the last season Johnson was the offensive coordinator of the Lions. So, he has proven his offenses can put up well over 30 points per game. Johnson laid out some other goals including shutouts and blowouts. The Bears actually hold the record for the most shutouts in a season with eight back in 1932. However, they have struggled with getting shutouts for over a decade. In fact, Chicago has not shut out an opponent since Week 11 of the 2010 season against the Miami Dolphins. It would be a victory for the franchise to shutout one opponent this season much less recording multiple shutouts. The Bears were able to record multiple blowouts last season with their 28-point victory against the Cleveland Browns and 17-point victory against the Dallas Cowboys. However, Johnson is going to want more than two blowouts this season as he is clearly looking for Chicago to be the most dominant team in the history of the NFL this season.
