The Chicago Bears offense was statistically the best they have had since 2013 and led the Bears to their first NFC North title since 2018. Naturally, fans want to see the stars of the offense, including quarterback Caleb Williams, back on the field. But, it is unclear whether that is going to happen in the preseason. As a rookie in 2024, Williams played in multiple preseason games. He also saw some preseason action last year in the first season with head coach Ben Johnson. But Johnson has not said whether the starters will be playing in any of Chicago’s preseason games, including their matchup this Saturday against the Cleveland Browns. For Williams, he'll leave the decision up to his head coach. "I don’t have a preference. Whatever coach says, I treat practice like it’s a game," Williams said. "Getting into that mindset is really important, and being able to snap in and out of that is really important. Whenever Coach tells me that I’m going to play is when I’m going to play, and if I don’t, I don’t. I’m going to keep treating practices, our scrimmages, and our joint practices like games. I don’t know what’s going on in Bossman’s mind."
Getting preseason reps did not seem to help the Bears offense too much in the first two games of the season last year. Chicago started the year 0-2 and looked disjointed offensively and defensively, particularly against the Detroit Lions in Week 2. However, they got things going the following week against the Dallas Cowboys. This season is a bit different from last year though. Last year was an adjustment for everyone on the Bears roster with it being the first year under Johnson and his offensive scheme. This year, most starters on the offense are now going into their second season under Johnson’s offense. So, this could change the preseason strategy for Chicago.
