Perhaps nobody made a bigger statement in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' opening preseason game against the New York Jets than undrafted rookie cornerback Ayden Garnes. Garnes stole the show with his game-changing 47-yard pick-six that propelled the Bucs to a comeback 24-16 victory. After consistently standing out during training camp with his strong play, Garnes may have locked up a roster spot with his performance against the Jets. It will be very difficult for the Bucs not to keep Garnes after the stellar offseason he has had. The injury suffered earlier in OTAs by possible starting CB Benjamin Morrison, who is facing enormous pressure to prove himself this year, opened up extra opportunities for Garnes, which he took full advantage of. However, nothing Garnes accomplishes on the football field will match the impact he has already made off of it. Garnes began his collegiate career at Duquesne University. While he was there, as shared by the JP Peterson Show, the entire team participated in an annual bone marrow donation drive, which had been part of the program for several years, to support the Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation. The goal was to add to the number of donors in the Be The Match registry. Everyone involved in Duquesne's football program was given a simple swab and entered into the database. Garnes was the only one who turned out to be a match. Life-Saving Decision When Garnes was told he was a match whose bone marrow could save the life of a female in her 20s living outside the USA, he quickly agreed to the procedure. With the surgery set for January 2023 in Boston, Garnes spoke with CBS Pittsburgh beforehand and spoke about the procedure. "It's going to be two incisions on the side of my hips, on the side of my hips and they are going to go in, and they can make over 100 incisions inside, but it's going to look like it's one incision outside." Barnes' life-saving decision to go through the surgery showed exactly what type of human being he is, as noted by his then-defensive coordinator, Michael Craig. "He's a quality young person that represents our university really well and our football program really well and this is just another feather in his cap for the type of man he is," Craig said. Garnes didn't miss any games after his surgery and came back strong for the Dukes in the 2023 season. He would transfer to West Virginia the following season before finishing his college career at Arizona last year. Final Thoughts All NFL teams talk about wanting players with high character. Tampa certainly has one in Barnes, who can live the rest of his life knowing he gave a woman the opportunity to live hers. Though it happened years ago, hopefully this story will reach many people who have never heard about it. Maybe hearing about what Garnes did for that woman will inspire some people to donate. No matter how Garnes' NFL career turns out, he will always be a real-life hero who gave another human being the gift of life. Garnes is in the process of proving to people that he is a terrific football player. He has already proven that he is a terrific person.
