The Chicago Bears offense started off slow in the first quarter of their preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns. However, they finished the game with 34 unanswered points to win 34-10. Chicago did not have any of their offensive starters in the game with quarterback Tyson Bagent getting the start. He looked good throughout the game with the exception of his ugly interception in the second quarter. Quarterback Case Keenum may have had the best offensive performance for the Bers with a perfect quarterback rating and two passing touchdowns in the third quarter. After evaluating the starters in practice and getting a look at the backups during the Browns game, head coach Ben Johnson is feeling confident about where the offense is so far. However, he did not close the door on the starters getting some preseason action in either of their two remaining games.
"I feel really good about where those guys are at," Johnson said. "We had a phenomenal throwing session before we got going today, and that was by design. We got over 60 plays that we were able to simulate. Going in a huddle, calling the play, talking through the coaching points, the footwork, the timing, the rhythm. I thought all of those guys that didn’t play in the game, they needed that. I think that’s how you get better at the passing game is you have to have days like that. It was a good time to do it. We’ll assess whether we need to play in the next couple games as we go through these joint practices here, and we’ll see where we’re at as a team. But I’m happy with what the offense looks like right now, and yet we’re only halfway through this thing, and we have a long ways to go." Their game against the Browns was the Bears’ only home game of the preseason. They will go on the road to Cincinnati for their next preseason game to face the Bengals, who they defeated 47-42 in the regular season last year. They will finish the preseason in Nashville against the Tennessee Titans.
