PolicyDriftBielema: Illinois Passing Game Hit With Two Serious Injuries

The 2026 Illinois Fighting Illini passing game is expected to be on par with or perhaps even better than last year s with quarterback transfer Katin Houser and rising wide receiver transfer.

The 2026 Illinois Fighting Illini passing game is expected to be on par with or perhaps even better than last year's with quarterback transfer Katin Houser and rising wide receiver transfer Jayshon Platt in Champaign, Ill.

The Fighting Illini have also been active in the transfer portal lately, securing a commitment from former Incarnate Word receiver Joshua Lorick, although it is unknown what his playing status will be this season.

On Thursday, news broke on the injury front that could easily be viewed as a major setback for the Fighting Illini faithful, particularly in the passing game where two of Houser's targets are now dealing with potentially serious injuries.

Thurman, Perry Injuries Announced

Fighting Illini coach Bret Bielema addressed the media Thursday during which he broke the bad news.

According to Bielema as told by Jeremy Werner of 247Sports.com, former junior college transfer and tight end BJ Thurman had a Jones fracture. Thurman is expected to have surgery on his foot and could miss the entire season.

Bielema also said that wide receiver Alex Perry, who was expected to back up Platt, has a shoulder injury, will undergo surgery, and will likely miss the entire 2026 season.

The injuries come at a rough time with the season a little less than a month away.

Meanwhile, Bielema and offensive coordinator Barry Lunney, Jr. will work to identify who can fill in for the two fallen players as they continue to solidify the team's depth chart heading into week one against the UAB Blazers.

Passing Game Has Weapons, Questions

The Fighting Illini passing game has plenty of weapons for Houser heading into the 2026 season but also plenty of question marks, especially now that their depth has taken a hit.

The expected starting wide receiver trio of Platt, Collin Dixon and Hudson Clement could be one of the best in the Big Ten, and possibly the nation, if Houser's offensive line protects him well enough to find them down the field and Houser delivers.

At the tight end position, former Ball State transfer Christian Abney is expected to start but there is competition.

6-foot-6, 265 pound South Dakota State transfer Davin Stoffel had just one catch for 24 yards last season but has the talent to secure the starting spot.

Former running back Kaden Feagin also should see the field this season as a run-after-catch specialist who can reel off big chunks of yards on short passes from Houser.

Feagin's position change could be seen as a positive because of his talent or a negative because of the relative inexperience of the tight end position which may have necessitated it.

At this point, only Bielema and his coaching staff truly know, which should make for an exciting non-conference schedule as the Fighting Illini sort through the pecking order and give plenty of new players opportunities to show what they can do in preparation for the Big Ten season.
