Final Phillies 9, Twins 1 Starting pitcher performance The first time Connor Prielipp loaded the bases, he was able to get out of his jam by giving up just a run. The second time, he wasn’t quite so fortunate. Prielipp, who gave up one run in his first four innings of work on Saturday, fell apart in a fifth inning in which he gave up seven runs. After the first batter of the inning reached on a single, Prielipp recorded a pair of outs before the inning unraveled. The rookie starter walked Trea Turner on five pitches and Bryce Harper on four, loading the bases for former Twin Luis Arraez, who looked at five pitches and then took his base, forcing in a run. “I just kind of lost feel for everything a little bit and then it just kind of got out of control,” Prielipp said. Alec Bohm and Edmundo Sosa followed with singles before Bryson Stott’s three-run home run capped the rally. All told, Prielipp gave up a career-high eight runs on eight hits while walking four in the loss. “In this game, there’s going to be a lot of ups and downs and the best thing I’ve learned is just to have a short memory and that’s all I’m going to do after this one,” Prielipp said. Player of the Game Bohm finished the day with a team-leading five hits for the Phillies, delivering an RBI single in the fifth inning and doubling three times. His five hits marked a career high. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Jesús Luzardo turned in a quality start, permitting just one run in his 6 2/3 innings pitched while striking out nine. The only run he gave up came in the sixth, when Ryan Jeffers and Royce Lewis hit back-to-back doubles, with Lewis hitting a ball off the left-field wall that just barely missed leaving the park. “We got some guys on. It looked like once we got guys on, the stuff ticked up. The sweeper was really good. The sweeper and changeup were really good,” manager Derek Shelton said. “He did a good job executing the fastball to the inner half of the plate to right-handed hitters. I think we see why over his last six starts he’s running out a sub-2 ERA.” Key moment While the Twins’ offense couldn’t do much against Luzardo and the Phillies’ bullpen — Minnesota was held to just one run by Philadelphia in the second consecutive game — the game was won and lost in the fifth inning, with Stott’s big swing providing the dagger. “He’s just a pretty good hitter and I made a bad pitch, 1-1 slider right down the middle and he was able to capitalize,” Prielipp said. Up next Dean Kremer (2-4, 5.25 ERA) will take the ball for the series finale against the Phillies. He will square off against Andrew Kremer (2-8, 6.27 ERA). Related Articles
