Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables has built the defense in his image. The Sooners play with an edge, bring relentless pressure and rarely allow opposing offenses to get comfortable. That has become one of the defining characteristics of Oklahoma football under Venables, and quarterback John Mateer sees that intensity every day. For Mateer, there is no question about what his head coach brings to the table. Venables has never tried to hide who he is as a coach. His intensity is obvious on the sideline, in practice and when he addresses his players. "He's intense," Mateer said on 'See Ball Get Ball with David Pollack.' "All of the time. He embraces it. He says that's how it's going to be. He's not hiding it. But it's good. It keeps all of us on 10 all of the time. We can't get away with anything." That mentality has helped create the standard Venables expects from his players. There isn't much room for taking plays off or becoming complacent when the head coach demands maximum effort every day. For a team trying to take another step forward in 2026, that can be extremely valuable. Oklahoma's defense carried much of the load last season, helping the Sooners reach the College Football Playoff despite an offense that struggled to consistently move the football. Venables' decision to take over defensive play-calling played a major role in that turnaround. Now, the challenge is making sure the offense catches up. Mateer and the Sooners' offense have spent the offseason trying to improve, but they also have to do it while meeting the standard set by Venables and the defense. That competition in practice could help push the entire team forward. Venables' intensity isn't simply a personality trait. It's becoming part of Oklahoma's football identity. If the Sooners can combine that defensive mentality with a more efficient offense in 2026, they could be much more than a team that sneaks into the College Football Playoff. They could become a legitimate threat to make a deep run once they get there.
