New Zealand seamer Brett Randell has signed with Derbyshire to strengthen the bowling attack during the final stretch of the County Championship season. The move provides cover for the final six matches while Muhammad Abbas is away on international duty with Pakistan. Randell brings substantial domestic cricket experience from New Zealand, where he has taken 86 first-class wickets at an average of 25.15 across 30 matches.

Derbyshire faced significant injury concerns in their seam bowling unit heading into the run-in. Zak Chappell is building fitness after injury, while Harry Moore, Rory Haydon and Pat Brown are unavailable for the remainder of the campaign. The club needed to add depth to their attack during a critical period as they challenge for promotion in Division Two.

"We needed to add depth to our seam attack for the run-in, with the games coming thick and fast towards the end of the season. Muhammad is away with Pakistan, Zak Chappell is building his fitness after injury so it would be a lot to ask him to play all six, while Harry Moore, Rory Haydon and Pat Brown are out for the season, so it was crucial we got in a quality bowler to help take some of the load off the players we have available. Brett has that quality, he’s an experienced seamer who will complement our group really nicely as we challenge for promotion in the final six games," Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, was quoted as saying by Cricket World.

Randell's experience and ambitions at Derbyshire

Randell expressed enthusiasm about joining the county side and working with head coach Mickey Arthur. The New Zealand bowler is eager to contribute to Derbyshire's promotion push during the closing stages of the season. He acknowledged Arthur's coaching credentials and the opportunity to learn from an experienced mentor in the English domestic game.

"I’m looking forward to returning to county cricket with Derbyshire, Mickey is an outstanding coach and someone I’m eager to learn from. “Derbyshire are in a good position in the division and I’m excited to hopefully help them win some games and challenge for success come the end of the season," Randell said.
