Bronny James has come in for criticism in the NBA, but if his offseason work is anything to go by then he may just be about to change some people’s opinions.
Drafted 55th overall by the Lakers in 2024, Bronny James made history sharing the floor with his father, LeBron. But his rookie campaign was primarily a developmental path, splitting time between limited NBA minutes and building his game on assignment with the South Bay Lakers in the G League.
In his second season, Bronny made noticeable strides as a developer. He earned a more consistent spot in the Lakers’ rotation, playing in 42 games while continuing to sharpen his game with South Bay in the G League. But most importantly, his perimeter shooting took a real leap, hitting nearly 39% from deep.
It was always going to be a difficult ask for Bronny to follow in his dad’s footsteps, given how much he’s achieved in the NBA, but he’s working on his own game.
Bronny James steps up preparation for new NBA season
The new ownership at the Lakers may shake things up, but as it stands, Bronny James has a guaranteed 15-man roster spot for the 2026–27 season after locking in his $2.3 million contract.
With something to work towards, footage (via Chris J Hoops) of Bronny surfaced on line of him getting up shots in the gym, particularly working on three pointers from the corner and a LeBron-esque dunk at the start.
This garnered quite the reaction from NBA supporters online, who were actually quite impressed.
This fan could even see shades of LeBron: “Yea Bron genes starting to kick in fr.”
Another fan liked what he saw: “Okayyy bronny.”
“Move over Luka, we starting by Christmas Day,” one supporter even suggested he could overthrow Luka Doncic.
One supporter even thinks LeBron James leaving the Lakers will come as a blessing: “Honestly believe he’s going to play better without dad being around now.”
“Bronny is ridiculously athletic,” lastly, this fan was wowed by his athleticism.
This is a valid point. It could actually benefit Bronny to move away from the spotlight of having his dad play on the same roster, allowing him to carve his own path.
They’re not the only one who believes this, as Devean George also stated that the best decision for Bronny James’ NBA career would be to develop with the LA Lakers.
