Michigan State has already seen what an elite transfer running back can do in East Lansing.
In 2021, Kenneth Walker III arrived from Wake Forest, exploded onto the national scene and became the first Spartan to win the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top running back.
Five years later, Michigan State has another experienced transfer entering the season with a legitimate chance to make a run at the same award.
Cam Edwards isn’t just on the Doak Walker Award watch list. He has the production, opportunity and running style to become a serious contender for it in 2026.
Edwards Is Coming Off a Huge Season
Edwards doesn’t arrive at Michigan State as an unknown player hoping to break out.
He already broke out.
During his final season at UConn, Edwards rushed for 1,240 yards and 15 touchdowns on 210 carries, averaging 5.9 yards per attempt. He also caught 19 passes for 187 yards and finished the year with 1,427 all-purpose yards.
His numbers ranked among the best running backs in the country.
Edwards finished 15th nationally in rushing yards, 13th in rushing touchdowns and 17th in rushing yards per game. He also tied for ninth nationally with 16 total touchdowns.
That’s already Doak Walker-level production.
Now the question is what Edwards can do with an opportunity to produce those numbers in the Big Ten.
He Has Been One of the Most Productive Backs in UConn History
Last season wasn’t some random breakout year, either.
Edwards finished his UConn career with 2,690 rushing yards and 27 rushing touchdowns, placing him fifth in program history in both categories. His career average of 5.6 yards per carry also tied for the best mark in UConn history.
He also brings plenty of experience, appearing in 36 games and making 23 starts before transferring to Michigan State.
That matters.
Edwards isn’t learning how to handle a major workload. He’s already proven he can do it.
His Running Style Should Translate to the Big Ten
The jump from UConn to the Big Ten will obviously bring stronger defenses, but Edwards has a running style that should translate.
He’s listed at 5-foot-11 and 210 pounds, giving him enough size to handle carries between the tackles while still having the speed to create explosive plays.
One of the most impressive parts of his 2025 season was what happened after defenders reached him.
Pro Football Focus credited Edwards with 763 rushing yards after contact last season, along with 28 runs of at least 10 yards.
That’s exactly the type of runner Michigan State needs.
The Spartans aren’t going to have perfect blocking on every play. Edwards’ ability to turn a two-yard gain into five or break through contact for an explosive run could completely change the offense.
Michigan State Should Give Him Plenty of Opportunities
Winning the Doak Walker Award requires more than being talented.
You need touches.
Edwards should get plenty of them.
Michigan State rebuilt its running back room through the transfer portal, adding Jaziun Patterson and other pieces while returning Brandon Tullis. But Edwards enters the season as the clear headliner after producing more than 1,200 rushing yards last season.
If Edwards receives somewhere around the 210 carries he handled last year, another 1,000-yard season should be a realistic expectation.
If Michigan State’s offensive line takes a step forward and Edwards gets closer to 230 or 250 carries, that’s when things could get interesting.
A season approaching 1,400 or 1,500 rushing yards with 15-plus touchdowns would force Edwards into the national conversation.
The Spartans Need the Running Game to Lead the Offense
Edwards also landed in a situation where his position should matter.
Michigan State is entering Year 1 under Pat Fitzgerald, and establishing a physical running game should be a major part of creating the identity he wants in East Lansing.
The Spartans were 4-1 last season when rushing for more than 115 yards, compared with 0-7 when they failed to reach that mark.
That makes Edwards more than another offensive weapon.
He could become the player Michigan State builds its offense around.
Alessio Milivojevic has shown promise at quarterback, while Chrishon McCray leads a rebuilt receiver room. If the passing game can keep defenses honest, Edwards should have opportunities to take advantage on the ground.
The Schedule Gives Edwards Chances to Make a Statement
Stats will get Edwards into the conversation.
Big games could put him near the top of it.
Michigan State travels to Notre Dame, Wisconsin, UCLA and Michigan while hosting teams like Nebraska, Illinois, Washington and Oregon.
Those are opportunities.
If Edwards runs for 150 yards against Michigan, Notre Dame or Oregon in a nationally televised game, people are going to notice.
That’s especially important for a player coming from UConn. Edwards already has the production. What he hasn’t had is the weekly national attention that comes with playing Big Ten football.
Michigan State gives him that stage.
He’s Already Receiving National Recognition
Edwards isn’t completely flying under the radar.
On Aug. 18, he was officially named to the Doak Walker Award preseason watch list. Earlier this month, he was also placed on the Maxwell Award watch list, which recognizes candidates for the best player in college football.
Those preseason lists don’t guarantee anything, but they show that Edwards’ production at UConn has already earned national attention.
Now he gets the opportunity to strengthen his case against Big Ten competition.
Could History Repeat Itself?
The Kenneth Walker comparison is impossible to completely ignore.
Walker arrived at Michigan State as a transfer running back in 2021 and immediately became the centerpiece of the offense. He rushed for 1,636 yards and 18 touchdowns while helping the Spartans win 11 games and ultimately brought the Doak Walker Award back to East Lansing.
Nobody should expect Edwards to automatically become the next Kenneth Walker III.
But there are similarities.
Both arrived as experienced transfer running backs. Both came to Michigan State after already showing they could produce elsewhere. And Edwards now enters 2026 with an opportunity to become the focal point of a Spartan offense trying to turn the program around.
Cam Edwards Has a Real Chance
Edwards isn’t going to enter September as the favorite for the Doak Walker Award.
That’s what makes him interesting.
He already rushed for 1,240 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. He’s proven he can handle more than 200 carries. He can break tackles, create explosive runs and contribute as a receiver.
Now he’s getting a bigger stage.
If Edwards can turn his UConn production into an even bigger season at Michigan State and help the Spartans get back to winning football, his name could climb the Doak Walker race quickly.
