Canada all-rounder Harsh Thaker has been fined 30 per cent of his match fee and handed two demerit points for showing dissent at an umpire's decision during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 fixture against Scotland in Dundee on Friday. Thaker was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with showing dissent at an umpire's decision during an international match.

Thaker shows frustration after LBW appeal rejected

The incident took place at the end of the 26th over when Thaker reacted angrily after the on-field umpire turned down Canada's leg-before-wicket appeal. The Canadian all-rounder flailed his arms and shook his head in disappointment. After receiving his cap back from the umpire, Thaker also gestured towards members of Canada's coaching staff, indicating that he believed the batter was out.

Thaker accepts sanction

Thaker admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Graham McCrea of the ICC International Panel of Match Referees. As a result, there was no need for a formal hearing. The charges were brought by on-field umpires Gazi Sohel and Iain McDonald, along with reserve umpire David McLean. The two demerit points mark Thaker's first offence in a 24-month period.

A Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct can result in an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50 per cent of a player's match fee, and one or two demerit points. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points. Two suspension points result in a ban from one Test, two ODIs or two T20Is, whichever comes first for the player.

Canada suffer heavy defeat against Scotland

The disciplinary action came after a difficult outing for Canada, who suffered a heavy defeat against Scotland in the World Cup League 2 fixture. Scotland posted 347/7 before Canada were bowled out for 177, losing the match by 170 runs.
