The driver market may be gearing up for another major move, but this one is all about continuity. According to recent paddock rumors, Williams Racing is actively moving to lock down its star driver for the foreseeable future.
As detailed in a recent update, Spanish sports outlet Marca reports that “Carlos Sainz is reportedly close to signing a contract extension with Williams.”
If the deal goes through, it will be a massive vote of mutual confidence between the multi-time Grand Prix winner and the historic Grove-based squad.
Salary Bump for Sainz—Stability for Williams
When Sainz originally signed with Williams, it was widely viewed as a major coup for Team Principal James Vowles. Now, it appears Vowles is willing to pay a premium to keep the Spaniard happy and off the free-agent market.
According to the report, securing Sainz’s long-term future will not be cheap. “If a new agreement is reached, the Spaniard is expected to see an increase to his €13 million salary,” the post noted.
While €13 million already places Sainz comfortably in the upper tier of Formula 1 driver salaries, a significant bump would reflect his immense value as a team leader, a development asset, and a highly consistent point-scorer.
From a strategic standpoint, an extension makes perfect sense for both parties.
Formula 1 is currently navigating the massive 2026 aerodynamic and power unit regulation reset. Historically, teams that maintain driver stability during major regulation changes adapt much faster than those onboarding new talent. By extending Sainz, Williams ensures that both he and his teammate, Alex Albon, remain deeply integrated into the team’s ongoing car development program without any contractual distractions.
