Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari exit in 2025 as a result of Lewis Hamilton’s arrival pushed him to begin a fresh journey with Williams, a team that was struggling to score points. In his second year with the Grove-based outfit, Sainz finds himself at a crossroads as he decides whether to extend his stay with Williams, with his current contract set to expire at the end of this year. However, reports suggest the 31-year-old has rejected the team’s contract extension offer.

Sainz’s first year with Williams was an improvement for the team compared to the 2024 season, as his insights helped upgrade the car to a points-scoring level. However, things don’t seem that positive this year given the sporting and technical regulation changes that introduced a new generation of cars this season.

Being a midfield team with limited resources, Williams has been struggling with the performance of the new car, and Sainz has realized that elevating Williams to the podium and eventually to the level of a race-winning team will require more time and effort than he had anticipated.

Thus far, the Spaniard’s best finish of the 2026 season has been P9 in China, Miami, and Canada. Two DNFs and a P18 in Hungary represent his worst finishes until the summer break. Sainz has not spoken about moving to another team and has repeatedly stressed the point that his goal is to make the project at Williams work. But with time ticking, he would likely not refuse if a tempting opportunity came his way from one of the top teams.

A report by French publication Next-Gen Auto revealed that Sainz has rejected a contract extension offered by Williams for two additional years because of reports about Max Verstappen’s potential exit from Red Bull for a move to McLaren, because Red Bull has failed to offer him a championship-winning car in the season thus far. Verstappen’s potential move away from Red Bull could mean an empty seat for Sainz to fill.

Then there is Aston Martin, which has been on the back foot this year due to engine vibration issues. However, there is a strong chance of the team bouncing back. Fernando Alonso, who will turn 46 next year, has hinted that this could be his last season in F1, and his exit could lead to a spot that Sainz could eye, according to the report.

Next-Gen Auto goes on to claim that Alonso has reportedly spoken to Sainz on the matter, and that Sainz has been offered a seat by Aston Martin in case Alonso decides to retire. With multiple options on the table, the Williams driver is following a wait-and-see strategy, especially since he has also approached Audi, but it is unlikely that talks will go ahead. In any case, Sainz always has Williams as a backup option in case nothing else works out.
