The Tennessee Titans made their intentions clear in April: they are all-in on building around Cam Ward. They used the fourth overall pick on Carnell Tate, a 6’3” playmaking receiver out of Ohio State who has fantasy football managers salivating over what is possible as this offense comes of age.
Has the hype surpassed realistic expectations for this rookie, or is buying in now the savvy move to make?
Should You Draft Carnell Tate in Fantasy Football?
Tate’s Redraft Fantasy Football Value
The profile is nothing short of elite. Tate was a big play waiting to happen with the Buckeyes last fall, posting numbers that mirror a special rookie season from another dynamic prospect:
- 2023 Brian Thomas: 17.3 yards per catch, 70.6% first-down rate, 78.2% catch rate
- 2025 Carnell Tate: 17.2 yards per catch, 68.6% first-down rate, 77.3% catch rate
Raw talent isn’t the question. Tate has the physical makeup of a WR1 in this league, and there isn’t a real threat to his Day 1 volume.
Sure, Wan’Dale Robinson is coming off a big season with the Giants, and Calvin Ridley has productive years on his resume. However, neither projects as the type of player who will stop Tate from seeing all the work he can handle during his first professional season.
Your confidence in Tate is strictly a question of what you expect from Cam Ward in Year 2. He was spotty during his rookie season, showing flashes of potential alongside the type of inconsistencies common for a developing young quarterback attached to a limited roster.
In 2025, a Ward pass-catcher scored over 17 PPR points only once (Ridley in Week 5). That obviously needs to change, and we did get some proof of this general path to production last season by way of the Carolina Panthers.
Bryce Young leveled up in a meaningful way, which resulted in his rookie ace receiver posting a WR20 finish. The raw numbers were encouraging, but if you subtract just 2.0 points per game (PPG)—something that could easily happen if Ward doesn’t take the same steps forward as Young—Tetairoa McMillan would have finished the season outside the top 35 at the position.
The McMillan corollary is the one to follow, but it’s tough to project with confidence. He was the only Panther with 400 receiving yards last season. While I don’t think the Titans are loaded with options, they have enough depth to subtract from the bottom line as a unit—never mind the three-headed backfield that will chew up usage in an offense that ranked 26th in total plays a season ago.
If you’re going to grab Tate at cost, you’re selling yourself on Ward inching this offense toward the league average. Many managers fall into the trap of ignoring surrounding talent, assuming a bad team will inevitably throw the ball all over the yard.
In theory, that makes sense. In practice, less so. Only one receiver attached to a bottom-five offense in 2025 averaged double-digit PPR points per game—the minimum it takes to hold our interest.
Personally, I think the rookie receiver will be great with time, but he is currently being drafted closer to his ceiling than his realistic expectation in redraft formats.
Tate’s Dynasty Fantasy Football Value
This is the bet to make. We’ve seen receivers like Marvin Harrison Jr. and Jordan Addison get drafted into situations that had no real direction at the quarterback position.
That’s not to say those situations can’t work out, but it’s certainly cleaner this way. This is the Luther Burden plan: pair an explosive talent with a quarterback who has already provided proof of concept as a franchise centerpiece.
I like it.
The challenge here is walking a fine line. Tate isn’t going to sneak up on anybody this season given the draft capital spent on him, making it impossible to get him at any sort of discount entering 2026.
But what if I’m right?
What if the early going isn’t pretty? What if this Titans offense looks broken through the first month?
